Frustrated Budget Bride

Hi ladies! I've been lurking for a little while now, posting here and there. I had to post because I'm already feeling really frustrated. I feel like my future wedding falls between the cracks since we have a teeny tiny itsy bitsy budget. ($8k total budget) I know that's not a lot for most weddings but it's really difficult for us to come up with that much! (We're paying for part of it and my parents are paying for the other part. But I just graduated grad school, I'm now a social worker, and my fiance is still in school finishing his degree.)

I'm trying to be reasonable with our plans to balance things out. We're trying to find somewhere to have the ceremony and reception in Miami. (My ideal would be a garden'ish wedding and a reception somewhere indoors.) We're trying to keep our guest list down to 85-95 people at the very most. Our ideal date is 9/2/12, a Sunday! We're open to any time or type of reception (brunch/lunch/dinner). So far we've only found 3 possible options. (And by possible I mean, venue and food within our budget and not in a church's hall.) Oh, we don't want a videographer, we have a friend that will get us our flowers at her distributor price, I prefer butter cream cakes over fondant and I'm totally willing to do lots of DIY!

I live in Tallahassee now but grew up in Miami (down by the Falls, south of South Miami but north of Homestead). Since my parents still live there and most of our guests will be from OOT (and that's a good place to fly/travel to) we're planing on having the wedding down there. I'd love any suggestions or thoughts, or even just words of encouragement.

-Vicky

Vicky....don't give up on your dream wedding! There is a company that I have read about called Events on a budget (there are other people on the board that are using them) and they have something called wedding in a box for $10,000 for 100 people.  I don't know the specifics, but maybe you can look into it.  Pinecrest Gardens (the old Parrot Jungle) might also work as a venue.  Good luck!

My daughter is using Melissa from Events on a Budget. Her venue is the Miami Beach Botanical Garden. It doesn't usually show up on internet searches for wedding venues but it may be what you are looking for. That have a few different spaces for rent and it was about the most affordable outdoor venue in Miami that we could find. I think the max that the Banyan room can hold is 120. That room also has an attached terrace where my daughter will have her dinner/dancing set up. The Banyan room will be used for the bar, extra indoor seating if people want to sit indoors for a while, cake table, etc.It was the outdoor venue that had the least restrictions as well. We visited on a weekend back in June and we basically had the entire garden to ourselves. I was concerned about that since my daughter's wedding is during the day. The garden closes at 5 (I think) so an evening reception would be private.
Melissa can customize her package to suit your needs. She is quick to answer emails and is wonderful. We started with the wedding in a box package and just upgraded things we wanted (flowers, food, wine) and downgraded what we didn't need (no need for uplights for a daytime reception outdoors).
The vendors we have with this package are Ivan Apfel- photography. Vision DJs. Catering Concepts for food and bar (awesome food so my daughter tells me), Sugar Shack for the cake (I was at the cake tasting- such a moist cake- it was delicious!). You will be very surprised with all that is included for the price.
Let me know if you have any more questions. My daughter's wedding is on 2/26 and I hope to post some pictures and also vendor reviews as soon as I can.

I second Miami Beach Botanical.... You can do both ceremony and reception there.
A great website for finding handmade affordable stuff for the wedding is etsy.com
and like waterroxy said, a lot of are paying for our own wedding w no or little help and many budgets are just like yours. So dont get discouraged, we all go through it  a few times during the course of the planning.

I am also paying for my own wedding with FI except for a little help from our parents (any amount helps) so I feel you... I also think you should check out the Botanical Gardens. If I think of something else, I will come back to add to that. You may also be able to do a ceremony on the beach and then do a lunch at a hotel/restaurant near by? If you're open to time of day and week day, a Sunday brunch of lunch would bring down costs by a lot!

I grew up in the same area :) Graduated from Palmetto!

And the frustration comes at all budgets I think... mine is higher than yours but I have never been this frustrated in my life... you'll find something, promise! The perfect venue within your budget is out there waiting for you :)

My budget isn't far from yours.  I was having migranes every time a venue sent me a price quote.  I'm also planning it from out of the area (NYC).  I was so relieved when my cousin offered me her huge backyard for the wedding.  I want to have the ceremony at Mattheson Hammock, but due to cost and convenience, I might just do it all in her backyard.  I wanted to do it on the beach, but Mattheson Hammock is the closest beach area there is to my cousin.

I'm actually flying down to Miami this weekend to check out her space and actually put some ideas down on paper.

One place that I was really considering was Cauley Square.  It's a really cute antique shopping mall.  Very pretty.

I totally understand budget. I am just a secretary at a hospital and FI was finishing his degree when we first started planning last year. I also grew up in the area, I live by Metro Zoo and I went to Southridge, lol. I am having the wedding at Pinecrest Gardens which I love. I wanted to stay in the area since we met in high school. I just gave a knottie a ton of information through email. Email me at chinnita713 on aol or FB me, Stephany Sanchez, and I can tell you the pros and cons. But it is definitely affordable and beautiful. I crashed a wedding at MB Botanical Garden and its nice, but I never got a quote for it. I didn't hear about Cauley Square til my caterer brought in up a couple weeks ago, but I am paying less than half at Pinecrest. Don't worry, my motto is, where there's a will there's a way. I am having a wedding for 102 people in under $10,000 and I honestly don't feel like I'm compromising much (the only thing I don't have is video, but I'll live). It's a matter of knowing your priorities.

    Hi Vicky!

Keep in mind that you're getting married in Florida's off-season, particularly for an outdoor wedding, so don't feel afraid to ask your venue for a discount! We're getting married on 8/27 on the beach, and since it will likely be sweltering, we got 50% off our location.

Also, I'm a very budget bride as well (5,000-6,000 is our budget), and the best advice I got is to prioritize 3 things to splurge on, and relax on the rest. That way you can still feel like you're getting your dream wedding, even though you can't afford everything. Here are some of our big money savers:

    1. Getting married in the off-season
    2. DIY drinks (we're just having beer, wine, and soda, and trusting our guests to serve themselves - though you have to make sure your venue will allow this).
    3. DIY Flowers, and not using many flowers - (I can't believe how much people spend on flowers! I'm making bouquets and bouts, and our centerpieces will be submerged roses, which saves a ton of money over having bouquet centerpieces)
    4. Our photographer is new to the business, so she is greatly discounted
    5. Cupcakes instead of a cake
    6. Small guest list
    7. Tons of DIY

I hope that some of this helps!

I am a budget bride that is looking into restaurants on the water with party rooms or oudoor patios. As long as they are not located in a hotel, you can find one for less than $65 per person including food and drinks and of course there will already be tables, chairs, tablecloths etc. We will probably do a quick ceremony at a nearby park first. HTH!

Hi Vicky, congrats. on your engagement and welcome to the boards.

The girls have all given you great advise and ideas.

My budget is b/w $6 - 8k, so I know exactly how you feel. It took me a year (NO JOKE), to find a venue that I love and was within my price range. I'm using The Chart House in Coconut Grove (you can find pictures and info. in my bio).

Things I'm doing to save money:
    1) DIY, DIY, DIY. Everything paper I DIY, STDs, invitations, programs, menus, valet tags, etc. For ALL the paper for my wedding, it was under $300. Including card pockets and envelopes. I have a custom isle runner that I also made myself. Everything that comes from a florist is DIY (saving me more than 50% over a florist), including wholesale flowers, vases, candles, etc. It's a lot of work, but you get a lot of satisfaction with all the personal touches, and save a ton.
    2) Like PP, my photog. is a newcomer to the business, and it saved me a fortune (50% over other inexpensive photogs.). And I totally love her work, so I do not for one moment feel I sacrificed on my photography.
    3) No videographer. A lot of ppl. say you'll regret it, but from before I even got engaged, anytime FI and I would talk about wedding plans I always said no video. I've always felt it's so obtrusive.
    4) I settled on a midday wedding followed by a cocktail hr. and lunch reception. I had always wanted an evening event, but doing it this way saved me a fortune.
    5) Don't feel pressured to spend more than you're comfortable with. Everything you need is out there at a price you can afford. And I know we see a lot of things that we want to incorporate into our wedding (TK will make you feel this way - lol), but just think, is this really necessary? Will my guests even notice or miss it?

    HTH and GL!

Another money saving idea- if you really want video- a film student can do this for you for way less than an established videographer. My son is a film student and we are hiring one of his friends to shoot my daughter's ceremony and reception. My son will do the editing, etc. We are paying his friend $300 for 8 hours.
I hop you are feeling better about your budget. As you can see, you are not alone!

Thank you so much ladies for your support and advice! I'm already feeling a little better, I feel like I can be optimistic again! I'm really excited to be here, it's clear there are some really amazing ladies here! This is going to be a long post, but I feel like I have to respond to each of you and your amazing suggestions.

abell@thefund.com, thanks for the suggestions! I'd looked in to Pinecrest Gardens and didn't think it would work but I'm trying to get more info to see if maybe it can work for us. I've also contacted Events on a Budget to see if their "wedding in a box" might work for us.

djoann958, I actually contacted Events on a Budget and Melissa contacted me right back asking me questions. Hopefully she'll get back to me, maybe that'll be an option for us as well! I've also not looked in to Miami Beach Botanical Garden, I'm going to contact them today to get more information. Good luck for your daughter's wedding! I'd love to see reviews afterward!

I love esty, shoegirl00! Way before a wedding was even an idea I was obsessed. Sadly I haven’t been able to buy a whole lot but I certainly shop stalk some vendors looking at their amazing work!

Thanks for the support WeAreGs! I actually was supposed to go to Palmetto (went to Palmetto Middle) but wound up at Coral Reef instead. Anyway, my ideal wedding isn’t a brunch/lunch but I’m open to that if that’s what it’s going to take to make our wedding happen. I never thought I wanted a beach wedding but seeing pictures at Matheson Hammock make me want to change my mind. (Well we can’t afford doing the reception at Red Fish Grill, I looked in to that already.) All the same, I’m going to be positive and hope that the perfect place is out there, we just have to find it! Maybe it’s just something so different I haven’t thought of or heard of it yet!

Hi cramo003! I’m actually in contact with Fetes and Events, my parents are going to meet with them this weekend to see a venue and get more information.

Good luck on planning your wedding salamary! Your wedding already sounds great! (If I knew someone with a great property/backyard I'd be so excited! Sadly I know no one in the area that has a large enough backyard to have a wedding.)

    Moonstar713  I emailed you. :)

Thanks for the suggestions dewreb!  I totally thought “off season” would mean discounts too! But so far either no one is willing to discount or their discount just barely puts them in the affordable range. I’m totally willing to diy as much as needed, even drinks. Unfortunately nowhere that we’ve contacted so far would allow us to bring our own. (So it’s been their drink prices or no drinks. If that’s the case it’ll wind up being no drinks.) My neighbor is going to help with my flowers (purchasing them for lower cost and putting it all together) so I’m hoping that’ll bring our flower money way down.

Thanks for the tip HeatherL212! I've looked in to a few restaurants so far, I'll keep looking though!

twinkle82576, the Chart House is actually one of my 3 possible venues. We were looking at either a brunch or lunch there. I’m really open to that idea but my fiancé doesn’t think the food options we’d be getting are that great. (I’m normally the picky one but all of a sudden he is now whenever wedding food is being discussed.) With the packages/pricing they’ve given we wouldn’t be able to have any alcohol (my Mom’s concerned about making that work without it being obvious/tacky). In the end though, it’s the place that’s given us the lowest quote for a lot, and so it’s really a front runner for us.

Thanks for the suggestion djoann958! My fiancé and I aren’t interested in a videographer; I know we’re crazy. But I have thought of using students if possible for things like that if we decide to do them (musician, etc).

    Vicky,

When I finally sat down w/Michelle at The Chart House, I worked it out to remove some food items from the package that I wasn't thrilled with, and add others. Nothing I did ended up costing me a penny more. It's really important to me to have open bar, so I was able to make it work out. Also, I saved by getting rid of the champ. toast. Hardly anyone I know drinks champ., and when it's time to toast, everyone can do it with w/e they're already drinking.

    GL!

jdanger I'm sorry you've been feeling that way! I'm sure everything will come together. I'd pick these ladies' brains, I'm sure they've got great ideas for you if you need them! I'm not sure what your photography budget is but I've contacted a few photographers with lower budgets and depending on what you wanted to spend I cold give you their info.

I just booked the botanical gardens for the last day opened 12-17-11 (i was able to get the day becasue an out of town bride cancelled) I've always loved this place and they include tables and chairs.
They told me that the garden will be under construction for about 5 months and it will re-opne for events in novemeber. Our original date picked was in november but they were all taken =(

They are booked till next year but maybe you can do what i did and tell them to call you if anything opens up. =)

good luck I know how frustrating this can be!!
