Cake AND cupcakes?

Last night my FMIL called and offered to buy our wedding cake. She has a friend who makes beautiful themed cakes and would like us to decide on a theme so she can order the cake. A couple of months ago, one of my bridesmaids offered to bake the cupcakes for our wedding, we were thrilled since cupcakes were exactly what we were thinking (our wedding doesn't really have a theme so it never even occurred to me to get a themed cake...).

I appreciate my FMIL's offer and I wouldn't mind having an actual cake and I don't think my friend would be too hearbroken not to make the cupcakes since she's already making all the invitations, her dress (and possibly the other BM dresses) as well as all the BM jewelry (she offered up all of this help, we'll be paying for all the supplies of course and probably giving her some extra as well)...but FI seems to think we should do both, cupcakes and a cake. Maybe this would work if the cake was small but I'm wondering if we'd do the same amount of cupcakes (1 for each guest) or can we cut back on the number of cupcakes since there will be cake available as well?

Thanks!

I think you could do both if you wanted.  But I would cut back on the number of cupcakes.  A great way to do it would be to do the cake a different flavor from the cupcakes.  This could give people a reason to choose between the two.  We just went with two flavors of cupcakes.

Do both. If you want to cut back on the cupcakes you can, so that way you won't have a lot of leftovers.

I think you could skip the cupcakes - especially since it sounds like your friend has a lot of work cut out for her as it is.  If you do go with them though, make less and do a different flavor.

Could she do a grooms cake to be served at the wedding instead?

We are doing both cake and cupcakes.  I like the idea of being able to have a variety of flavors available to our guests, but I want to keep the tradition of cutting the cake.  So, we are ordering enough cupcakes for everyone, and having a small cake for us to cut.

You have the cupcakes boxed with a sticker with your wedding date and use them as the favors.

If you want to have both I suggest the total number of servings equal the total number of guests.  For example, say you are having 100 guests.  A 10" round, 8" round and 6" round will serve 75 people (according to Wilton wedding cake standard). You could then have 25 cupcakes either around the cake or on their own stand to finish out the rest of the needed servings.

If you do have both, have the cupcakes a different flavor so the guests can have a variety. I was wondering if maybe the FMIL's friend could either do a groom's cake for the reception or rehearsal dinner or maybe a cake to have at your shower if you are having one? Or flip this and have the friend make cupcakes for the shower or rehearsal dinner and have the cake at the wedding, this way the friend has a little less work as there are usually less people at these events.

Or just go with a cake and let your friend have one more relief off of her shoulders? Any of these options would be great. Who doesn't love having more cake?
