Need Bora Bora Recs!

Okay...Ever since seeing the St. Regis resort in Couples Retreat FI and I have been obsessed with going to Bora Bora (terrible, I know). Of course, FI has super expensive taste and if it were up to him he'd just stay at the St. Regis every night. My parents are paying for our wedding and honeymoon and I've budgeted out about 10K for the honeymoon. I'd like to stay about 10-14 days, with FI's taste we'll never last.

I need hotel/resort, travel agent, restaurant, excursion, and tour recommendations! I've scoured Trip Advisor but I'd like some knottie advice too.

Anything will help! (p.s. honeymoon isn't until Aug 2011) Thanks ladies :)

Re: Need Bora Bora Recs!

  • Dream location! You need to watch The Bachelorette tonight - I think the finale is in Bora Bora.
  • Hi,

We went to Tahiti, Moorea, and Bora Bora for our honeymoon in May 2010 and had a wonderful time! We spent a total of 11 days/10 nights total.
I would recommend splitting your time since Bora Bora is the most expensive (for hotels, activities, food, everything! :)

You have to fly in to Papeete (Tahiti) so if you want you can stay 1-2 days there MAX, but I would recommend spending the majority of your time in Moorea and Bora Bora. Moorea is also really beautiful, hotels there are much cheaper as well as activities.

    So I would recommend:
Tahiti: 1 day or 2 days max (if you decide to stay, some people skip Tahiti alltogether)
    Moorea: 5 days
    Bora Bora: 5 days

For Tahiti, if you decide to go there, we stayed at the Intercontinental. I found the resort a little old and if I were to do it again I would probably choose the Radisson (newer) or the Manava Suites.

For Moorea, I would recommend either the Hilton Moorea, Sofitel, or the Intercontinental (they just finished rennovations there so should be pretty new by the time you go in August).

For Bora Bora, the top 3 choices are Four Seasons, St. Regis, and Intercontinental Thalasso. We stayed at the Thalasso and really enjoyed it.

For excursions, definitely do the ATV in Moorea. It was our most favorite actiity. we also booked jet ski tour and spa while in Bora Bora.

Also, book dinner at Villa Mahana in Bora Bora! best meal of our trip!

We booked our trip via Costco Travel, but heard some travel agent can get you great deals too. Heard good things about Jen from Pleasant Holidays, or Lisa Jones from American Express Travel: http://tahititraveler.blogspot.com/
  • Mrs. Holley, where are you staying? Have you booked any excursions and did you get a meal plan? I've heard Costco Travel has the best deals, a friend of mine got back last week and she booked with them, but I still want to do my research.

    Thanks ladies
  • The package includes all airfare and transfers taxes and fees.  We will stay in Tahiti for 2 nights at the Intercontinental Tahiti and then 5 nights in Bora Bora at the Thalasso in a diamond overwater bungalow.  You get breakfast at both paces and breakfast and dinner at the Thalasso.  Go to Costco travel.com and you can see some of the deals online.
  • We just got back from our honeymoon on Sunday night. It was fantastic!

We did 1 night in Papeete at the Intercontinental. I don't reccomend this option. None of the hotels in Papeete are very nice. After 1 night in Papeete we flew into Moorea (10 min flight), Doing it again, I would choose a water transfer for this part of the trip. Moorea is gorgeous! We stayed at the Hilton in Moorea and met many people that had been to the island many times, they all said that the Hilton had the best ammenities in Moorea. Everything here was expensive by normal standards, but nothing compared to Bora Bora. If you stay in a Garden Bungalow here, be prepared to be woken up by roosters. The GB is still very nice and it was a way for us to cut costs with that part of the trip. We were in Moorea for 5 nights and did a Manna Ray feeding excursion (amazing!) and a 4x4 tour (great way to learn about the island). Bring FCP money on the 4x4 tour and buy water at the store.

Bora Bora by far was the nicest part of the trip. We stayed at the St. Regis and although, quite expensive, it really was worth every penny. The service was impeccable and the room simply amazing. While there we only went off the Motu once and went to dinner at Bloody Mary's. DO NOT go to Bloody Mary's. It was a total tourist trap and the food and prices at the hotels are much better. However, Villa Mahana was reccomended to us. It is very expensive, but also a small house and a 4 course meal. The couple that reccomended it to us are total foodies and they said it was the best meal that they had ever had. All of the restaurants at the St. Regis are fantastic. We did 2 nights at Lagoon, 1 night at Te Pahu, and 1 night at Sushi Take. We also had a great massage...the spa is incredible! Their gym here is also much better than the Hilton in Moorea (which really doesn't have much at all). During the day we layed out on the beach, the pool, at the Oasis area, and even took out the Hobie cat for an afternoon (free). They have free water all over the resort and at turndown you get a tin of cookies and 2 evian waters. It may not seem like free water is a big deal, but we had to buy a lot of water in Moorea. I loved this part of our honeymoon and wouldn't have done much different. Best of luck in making your decision!

Elishabelle made some good suggestions; due to her opinion and other travellers opinions of Papeete (the main island), we plan to forego staying in papeete at all next year when we go on honeymoon. We want to do 5 days in moorea and 4 days in bora bora. Like you, il've been obsessed with researching bora bora as well since i saw Couples Retreat! Tahiti was always a dream vacation for me and i figure what better time to go on the trip of a lifetime than your honeymoon! Keep us posted! good luck
