Getting in Shape

Question for Runners

Hey guys!

My FI has decided to start jogging/running to get in shape for our upcoming wedding. He is new to it and not exactly in "the best shape" (has about 50 extra pounds) but hey we all have to start somewhere right? he is doing the C25K program and loving it.

My question is this: His birthday is coming up and I would like to get him something running related to further encourage and foster his desire to keep running.

I am not a runner ( Im a gym go-er) so I have no idea what a new runner would find useful or helpful in terms of equipment.I also do not know what brands are quality and which is junk.

He has great new shoes and an ipod already.
He complained that he hates having his keys and ipod in his pocket because they "clink" and annoy him but I dont know what would solve this.
Anything you remember from when you were starting out that you wish you had to make it easier/better? something you now cant run without?
Im ok spending up to about $200
Thanks in advance

Re: Question for Runners

  • ipod armband strap

a heart rate monitor (one that shows calories burned, distance, etc)

    Really nice running socks.

    a sweat wicking headband/hat/bandanna

foam roller massager (for loosening up tight muscles)

  • Ditto everyone else on an armband to hold things.

A nice running watch could be good.  I got one for Christmas and I really appreciate it.  It's easier than having to program my ipod when I want to time myself.

  • A GPS watch

  • Fuel Belt makes a bottle that has a "hand band" if you will that allows you to carry it.  There's a little pocket in it for keys, GU, etc.  Friends of mine who run don't always like the actually belt for water.  It can be a little awkward.  Also, if he's a beginner, he will only need one bottle so this might be great!

Apparently I have the Sprint Brazilian Palm Holder... how exotic!
  • New running shorts/socks!

Me and my FI always take off our car key and lace it onto our shoe lace and leave everything else at home/in car.

  • I just bought my fiance a Garmin which he is in love with.  I spent about $170 on Amazon.  He just ran an 8K and said it really helped him pace himself.  So if he intends on getting into races, that might be something to consider.  But if he's just in the beginning stages now, or is using a treadmill, he might not need that.

Does he have good shoes?  I know that might sound silly but when my fiance went to our local running shoe store (not a superstore - a locally owned specialty shop) and they watched his stride, and fit him properly, it made a world of difference to him.  He had shin splints before and doesn't anymore.

Also, one of those IDs that you can tie to your shoe so maybe he doesn't have to take his wallet/ID with him.
  • I have been a devoted runner of many years and I think the best thing to do here would be to get him good shoes and a cheap runner's pack (if he loses weight the strap will only adjust so much).

Really good quality shoes.  Take him to a runner store locally and get him fitted for really good shoes.  With the extra weight he is carrying around running with bad shoes will give him very real knee troubles and the shin splints the above poster mentioned.  This will keep him going as he will avoid injury

You can get a runner's pack there or order one through REI or pick one up at any local sporting goods store.  Don't buy it at the runner's store they will charge you through the nose.

Thanks for the tip on the runners store,
FI has really good shoes that he just purchased specifically for running- he knew with his extra weight knee/ankle issues might arise.  I will research more on runners packs to see which ones get good reviews.
