Fixing a torn veil?

I want to wear my mom's 27-year-old veil on my wedding day but we pulled it out of the box and it was slightly yellowed and had a 6" tear near the bottom. I took it to Widmer's to have it cleaned and repaired since they have a reputation for preservation and restoration. I was informed that the seamstress definitely could not fix the tear and that I would need to sign a waver to have it cleaned since it was already damaged and their machines might make it worse. I couldn't believe that they would try to clean a veil (especially one that old) with a machine, but whatever.

Do any of you ladies have a recommendation for someone around here who could do this type of work? It would mean a lot to be able to wear it. Thanks :)

Re: Fixing a torn veil?

  • Would it be possible to make the veil shorter, cutting off the part with the tear?
  • I realy wouldn't know. I think maybe, hccpsu has a good idea, if you didn't mind altering it.
  • The problem is that the tear is very near the bottom which is lined with pieces of lace. So you would have to remove the lace along the edges, shorten the veil by about a foot which would probably throw it out of proportion (I don't know what you would consider "cathedral length," but it's slightly longer than my dress), then reapply the lace to the shortened veil. At that point, I may as well buy a new veil. I guess that's also an option.
