  It really depends on what you want the pictures to look like and what you'll be using them for. 
  
  I'm getting married next Oct as well, but we are waiting until the spring to get our e-photos done.  Spring and fall are my two favorite seasons, and I like the idea of having photos of us in both seasons.  But we are not using them for the Save the Dates, so that gives us more time.

  Rockland Lake, Bear Mtn, Harriman St Park
  
  You don't necessarily need to get them done in the Winter.  We had ours done 2 months before the wedding.
  
  If you tell the photographer you want snow, s/he may be willing to play with the schedule and do something last minute.
