Fishing themed wedding HELP!!!

I am one of those girls who has always dreamed of her wedding and I recently got engaged to the love of my life! We both enjoy fishing a lot so I would like to incorporate this into our wedding. We are on a tight budget and would like to get married in April 2013. I will be calling the lighthouse in our city and also a site for the reception this week that is right on the lake I am praying they have availability for the day we would like to get married. I would love any suggestions that you all may have for decorations, favors, and things I may have forgotten. Thank you all in advance.

Re: Fishing themed wedding HELP!!!

  • Just a heads up in case you were considering using beta fish as centerpieces that it does not go over well. There's been a lot of posts if you're curious as to why its not a good idea but I would just avoid that idea all together. Sorry for starting off as a debbie downer and not trying to imply you were going to do that, it's just a common question that gets asked so it most be a popular idea somewhere.

I think the lighthouse would be super cute! I hope you get it for the date you want.

    Favor Ideas:
    - You could make fishing lures with your colors incorporated
    - Swedish Fish gummies in little containers/pails/buckets

    Decoration Ideas:
    - You could use tablecloths in your colors and then put fishing netting over the tablecloth as the overlay.
    - Since you're considering a lighthouse, you could use lanterns for the centerpieces
    - Fishing pails/buckets in your colors could be used as centerpieces with flowers and ribbon
    - cake topper
    - escort cards could be shaped like fish
    - "Gone Fishing" signs that are crossed out to say "Gone to get Married"

  • There are many reasons why using actual real fish is a bad idea, so I second not going there, but you have SO many options :)

I have seen some pretty floral arrangements where they incorporated little mini fishing poles, so that's an option. Your colours can be used to reflect fishing to a degree, sticking with blues/greens could make it easier to tie it in. For escort cards you could have a display where cards attached to fishing hooks or lures are up for display. Maybe for table numbers use fish names, or common fishing spots or equipment.
  • I second the little fishing poles coming out of the centerpieces idea; that sounds really cute! Maybe you could hang a little photo of the two of you from the fishing hook if it's not too distracting.
  • Oooh, brainstorming goodness! I love this part.

The first idea to pop into my head is the "tie the knot" pun: fishing/sailing knots.
    TtK invitations/save the dates
    knots in the ceremony
If you need to keep any children busy, you can have knot relays/games

But let me also ask if there's a type of fishing you prefer. e.g. are you "sittin' on the dock" types, like little children with fishing poles (that's not intended to sound patronizing- just cute), are you deep-sea fishers, are you fly fishers? Depending on your type, that can totally shape the whole feel and arc of the event. It can totally shape your music selections, etc (i.e. Calypso for Caribbean deep-sea to "Sittin' on the Dock of the Bay" for lazy river fishing)

If you want to tie in the food to this idea, the obvious choice is a fish course as an option. Seafood overall has pros and cons (expense, tastiness [YUM!], allergies, etc.)

Ok, I'll stop now before I just start rollin' with too many ideas.

Whatever you choose, start with the budget so that it can help you narrow down ideas by certain practicalities, too. Enjoy the planning!

Thank you all for these great ideas I have been reading about so many cute ideas now I just have to put it all together which I think will be the hardest thing. My fiance and I are fresh water fishers we live near the great lakes and love salmon fishing and walleye fishing.
  • Is that saltwater or freshwater salmon fishing?  See- since there are both, you can COMPLETELY do a sneaky double-themed wedding. the ceremony can be saltwater and the reception can be freshwater, or vice versa.

A before and after motif. :D

  • My fiance loves to fish and I love going with and lounging in the boat/on the dock with him. I just wanter to share our cake topper inspiration with you.

I found it on Etsy, but I am making it myself. We went through a TON of cake toppers together (this was something he really wanted to choose) and this was his favorite.

I recommend browsing Etsy for ideas. Even if you don't purchase anything there, you might find some great ideas :)
  • Fly hook escort cards, goldfish centerpieces, pics of you guys with a nice catch, net table overlays, bobber place card holders. There's really so many ways you can go with this. Great theme.
