Our Jewish Star Trek Wedding

Greetings Knotties! 3 months to go for our Star Trek theme wedding. My husband is Jewish and I am Wiccan. We want to have the traditional Jewish vows and a handfasting. A wiccan handfasting lasts a year and a day, then you renew your vows or call it quits. I will never leave my husband and we are going to have a Star Trek Anniversary Costume Party every year with the handfasting.

Our bridesmaids will be wearing the short blue Star Trek The Next Generation Season 1 Deanna Troi skant with tall black boots. The men will be wearing The Wrath of Khan era dark red uniforms.

Our colors are tiffany blue, black & silver. We are going to have white ostrich feather centerpieces with eiffel tower vases and blue lights in the vase. There will be black tablecloths with silver overlay. The cake table will have a tiffany ble tablecloth. We will be having roast beef and chicken cordon bleu with salad, baked potatoes, green beans baked apples & rolls. The cake is going to be a tall cake with different sized tiers in silver fondant. There will be white fondant stars cascading down the front of the cake.

*** I haven't decided on a topper. Should I have the initial "B" or have my cake lady make a topper with a Star Trek communicator cookie with gold fondant? I am afraid it will not look good though. I guess it depends on the finished product.***

Guests are encouraged to wear costumes. We will have a photo area for pictures of everyone who attends for the wedding book. We will be distributing DVDs of the final music montage my videographer will make.

*** What song should we have for our montage video?***

We will be walking down the aisle to the song in the wedding Fancy Feast commercials where the groom brings the kitty to the wedding.

***What are some good songs for the reception lineup?***

The room will be saturated in blue lights against white pipe and drape. It will be gorgeous!

My wedding planner bailed on me with 4 months to go. We had to hire new planners, and they are awesome! If you live in the KY, IN or Ohio areas check out Pink Elephant Celebrations. They saved my sanity and are even UNDER budget. woo-hoo!

Our photographers are Focus Photography with Jeff and Leah. Theyare good friends and just happen to be pros! They have photographed for Vogue magazine on a regular basis. I highly recommend them. Our videographer is PJ Woodside of PJ's Productions and Big Biting Pig Productions, a horror movie production company. We were in their last movie Spirit Stalkers.

Our light, sound and DJ is TerryTunks of Spectrum Sound. He has been doing it since 1974. He bubbles with creativity and uber  professionalism.

Ballards is our caterer. The Ballard Family bequeathed enough funds to the college to have their theatre program completely funded from now on. There is not an end date for the funds. As long as there is a college, the Ballards will be sponsering the program.

The wedding is a Star Trek theme but I do not know a lot about Jewish tradition, except we will have a chuppah.

***What traditional elements really define a Jewish wedding? We still have to find a rabbi too. Please help!***

Again, I highly recommend everyone on my wedding team. They are truly making our dream wedding come alive.

My dress is a princess style dress. It has a beaded bodice and a full tulle skirt. I just had a tummy tuck and breast lift 2 days ago. I am going to lookfantastic! I used to weigh 345lbs and needed the reconstructive breast surgery qand the 12lbs of skin removed from my abdomen. My husband is the best husband in the world. He paid for my surgery. I will forever be in his debt. He said I already paid him back, but I get teary eyed thinking of how good he is to me and how happy he makes me.

If you have any cool ideas for our theme wedding, please let me know! Thank you for your time.

Love,
Tammi Brown

Re: Our Jewish Star Trek Wedding

  • Hit the library or your local synagogue for the New Jewish Wedding handbook by Anita Diamant.  Our rabbi and three friends recommended it.  It goes into the whys and wherefores for each tradition in easy to understand language.  Several traditions have multiple meanings.   A couple of the traditions that we chose were the
    • Yichud, a 10-15 minute time of seclusion for the Bride and groom immediately after the ceremony,
    • the motzie, a prayer over a special enormous loaf of bread that was shared with all our guests at the dinner.  My FIL was touched that we asked him to perform the motzi
    • the huppah, an open canopy that the bride groom and officiant stand under
    • the breaking of the glass to symbolize that marriage is fragile
