Missing Marriage License

I went through hell yesterday trying to get our marriage license! I went to the town office where we got married in (that's where I was told it would be). They told me they didn't have it. They called over to the town in which I live. That person was out on a lunch break. I waited 30 minutes, then I personally called back, since the woman at the office wouldn't call her a second time! I was told that yes it was there (even though it should have been brought to the other town's office) but the town of where we got married is wrong so she can't issue it out to me! I asked her how long it would take to get a new one with the correction and she said 3 months!!!! I got so upset! I began raising my voice and then she hung up on me!

I called back, of course! The woman asked me if I was calm. I told her yes but I explained to her that we have over 20 checks that need to be cashed and they all say Mr. and Mrs. Smith SO I NEED MY LICENSE. She told me to go to my church to get a copy of the original they filled out. But she said I should have a carbon copy from my church. I said NOPE! I was never given that!

I then drove to my church. The office lady said, " I mailed that copy to your mother."  Why would she mail it to her?! That makes no sense! We are on file now with our address. Why not just mail it to us?!

I called my mom, she said she would look through the last two weeks of her mail. She called back an hour later and said she never got it. UGH!!!!!!

I am beyond mad! I want the carbon copy and also I want the certified copy from the state! I currenly have neither! I hate people that can't do their job correctly!

I feel your frustration.  We're at a standstill until her new license shows up in the mail. :(
  • I'm so sorry you're having to go through this Tara but I have to say I'm relieved that I am not the only one with marriage license woes!

We got a letter in the mail saying they rejected our license because it had been altered... someone circled the numbers where the witnesses needed to sign. Its so petty but the state will not accept it. So they are sending an affidavit to the minister (who lives in Az) along with a $25 fee. Once he signs that and sends it back they'll send him a new copy of the license to sign and mail back. I'm beyond annoyed because I only have 19 days left to get on DH's medical insurance through his work. Its going to take more than 19 days for a piece of mail to go back and forth to Az 4 times.

My sister is telling me to chill and relax but I'm just super annoyed by this. This is a prime example of why I'm a control freak, I let someone else 100% take care of something majorly important and now I have to go back and fix it all.

I hope you get your issue taken care of quickly. Try not to let it stress you out (although I feel your pain).

Wow.  Talk about a pain in the ass.

You might want to have him talk to the benefits people where he works.  I know when I added my wife that you put the status change date into the website, but they then send you a letter telling you that you have to prove the status change.  That might buy you a few days and/or him talking to the benefits people might get you a longer period to prove the marriage.  It's possible they might also take an affidavit from the minister proving he married you.

We had a bunch of checks made out to Mr. and Mrs. H and Ben was able to sign them himself and deposit them into his bank account. We deposited them at the ATM, not in person, but we haven't had any issues and it's been a month since the first checks were deposited.

Amity, do you have a copy of the "altered" license? Maybe you could check with your husband's human resources to see if they will accept that copy?

I didnt even think of that! I'm willing to bet they will accept it, its got all the signatures they need on it and I have a feeling they wont care that its been "altered" I'll have him check today. Thanks for the idea!

We had a check made out to Mr and Mrs and we deposited it into DH's account through the ATM with no issue at all. I'd go that route so you at least can have the money available to you.

  • That really sucks!
Can't you talk to the bank, show them some form of marriage license, and have your hubby sign the checks over to you?  I am sure they get this type of problem all the time.
I was lucky...I just walked my license into the office the day we got back from our Honeymoon.  They gave me the certified copy after 10 minutes and I was good.  Luckily I had the day off so I could go in there.
Maybe next time take it in person?  Hope that helps!

At this point it would probably be quicker to deposit them into his, withdraw the money after the period and redeposit it to yours.

I feel the pain.  I can't get her name changed with anybody yet because they want to see it on her license.  Not her license combined with the piece of paper they give you before the updated license shows up in the mail.  *bangs head on table*
  • I was able to get a certificate from my church. They didn't mail it to my parents afterall, they mailed it to me. It's not the offical certificate from the state but it's the official from the church, notiorzed and everything. This should work for the bank! I'm in no rush to change my name.

You would think.  I don't know what it is, but they're all a royal pain lately.  Despite having half a dozen forms now showing the marriage.  They don't do a thing until her license gets here from DMV.  Or we get some other form of government issued ID with her picture on it.

I really hope this doesn't happen to me. PA does not issue new cards until your licence renews. SO if you get married two days after your licence renews, you have to wait the whole 4 years until they give you a new card. I was lucky though. The church gives us the original copy a day after the wedding, or even sooner. The county sent us the certified copy a week later. I got my new ss card with the original from the church. I don't know why they make things so complicated.

SS was really easy for us.  That sucks on not being able to get a new ID with your name on it.  Must be fun when places want to match your ID with your credit card or whatever.

    When does yours renew?
  • about a year and a half. We aparently get a card that has it. I just hope that people will accept the little card.

Good to hear.  Mine is headquarted in VA.  You'd think that they'd had something setup for this other than to tell people to come back in two weeks.
