Anyone ever heard of Maryann Van Hoof?

She is a woman several decades ago who claimed to have had visions/visits from the Virgin Mary and a shrine was built where these visions happened.  Eventually her claims were refuted by Rome, but the shrine is still up and running as a functioning church (while it claims to be Catholic, it actually has no connection with the Catholic Church).
Apparently it caused a huge ruckus in the Catholic community several decades ago.

I just found out she's H's great grandmother (Mom's mom's mom).
No joke.
I found out from a family friend who knows someone who lives in the area where this shrine is. H didn't even know this.  We looked more into it and sure enough, the name of one of Maryann's daughters and the birthdate of the daughter lines up with H's grandma.

Idk whether to be scared or to laugh lol.

Yep! This shrine eventually turned into more of a cult/apocalypse type thing and everyone was excommunicated from the Church.  H's gma was the only of MaryAnn's kids to renounce those ways and return to the actual Catholic Church.
  • That is fascinating!  Thanks for sharing.
