Weight Loss Vent

I know there is an entire forum for this, but honestly, you ladies are the most friendly and nicest that I've found so I'm venting here.  Not that there aren't nice folks that post, but I keep running across some really catty, flat our rude ladies on the other boards.

Anyway, my FI and I started this diet that his daughter recommened.  His kids are all grown and she's a nurse.  The majority of the nursing staff at her hospital is now on this so we got the book and started is a couple of weeks ago.  I had already lost about 7-8 pounds before this.  I lost another 5 in the first 10 days and then stopped.  I knew I needed to workout more and had gotten out of the habit because I keep getting kidney infections (I'm on my 3rd since the beginning of the year).

Despite being vigilent in my eating, the scale was starting to creep back up.  I thought at first it was my cycle or water weight, but now I've gained back 4.  I'm not going to stop what I'm doing, but I'm not sure I can step things up right now.  I keep looking at that frackin ticker in my posts and know I need to change it to say 137 and not 133, but I keep hoping it will go back down.  I know stress can cause problems and I have been more stressed the past week and this isn't helping.

Since I can't really step up my workouts right now with the infection, I'm going to go back to black coffee and probably cut out all wine.  I was only drinking a glass or two of red on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, but I think I have to really crack down to get this done.  It's so true what they say about it being harder to lose as you get older.  I know I have time till the July wedding, but we're having a civil ceremony in April and I want to be at least 125 by then.

I'm just very frustrated because it was all going so well and if I were stuck at 133, that would be better than going back up!  Yell

I'm sorry that this is happening to you!  My weight is fluctuating a lot between 3-4 lbs and won't go down.  Have you tried tracking your calories to make sure that you're getting enough/not eating too much?  I use MyFitnessPal and the app on my phone makes it so easy because you can scan labels and it already has a lot of food such as produce and restaurant foods stored, so you don't have to find the calorie counts yourself. You can have it caluculate your amount of calories to eat based on how many pounds you want to lose per week and how much exercise you actually are able to get in.

  • What type of diet is it?

Personally I have been using WW and even when I am having weeks or even off months I still have noticed a drop in my weight every week just because I have become use to eating better.  I hate to workout and I just started to again on Monday after months of not doing it so this is not the reason for weight loss for me.

Sometimes people just plato on a diet and that could be what has happened to you.  Maybe if you change the diet you will start losing again.

    Good luck!
  • That must be frustrating! What kind of diet is it?

I've heard that it is 80% of what you eat and 20% of how much you exercise. Maybe a change in your meals will help? Sometimes I feel like my body is getting used to what I'm eating and if I "shock" my body by changing what I eat- I see the results (same with exercising).

How restricted are you for exercising?

Sometimes I just find that it's better if I don't focus on the scale, as long as you know you're doing everything right- maybe ignore the scale for a bit or limit yourself to checking it once a week or something like that. Your weight can range anywhere from 0-5 lbs in difference daily.

A few years ago FI realized he needed to get back in shape and he started working out but did not see the results until two months later. He was quiet frustrated for the first two months, but then the pounds started to melt away. Give yourself some time since you just started the diet, maybe.

  • Like AllyG, I'm also using the MyFitnessPal app and I think it's amazing.  I have always struggled with my weight and I find that it is SO helpful in keeping me from overeating. It's also great because you can track your exercise, too.  I love to work out, but sometimes when I do a lot of cardio I tend to overeat after, so this app is keeping me on track. Also, I don't feel deprived or restricted, b/c I can eat what I want as long as I stay at my calorie goal for the day.

OP, I think by cutting out some of that wine, you will see a difference! I hate how many calories are in liquor :( lol I only drink black coffee and water, so both of those are calorie free.  Liquid calories add up unfortunately!

  • have you been keeping track of your measurements too?

i have always, always, always been of the belief that inches matter more than pounds. i am extremely muscular and big boned, so i am never going to weigh what i would prefer to weigh.  for some people, waist to hip ratio means more than weight.  i would keep track of both your measurements and your weight just because even when your weight may fluctuate, you can see exactly where you are by your waist measurements.

there are also so many things that can cause your weight to fluctuate - your period, excess water/salt retention, gaining of muscle (if you are working out or lifting weights at all, you might actually GAIN weight if some of your fat turns into muscle).

i also totally agree with mekiakoo about "shocking" your body. if your body is used to eating a certain way, or working out a certain way, switching things up is the best way to have another drop.  i don't mean stop eating, just eat differently. perhaps switch from 3 meals a day to 5 smaller meals a day; cut out carbs for a week or two; swap one meal a day for an organic juice (right bridetobe?!?!?)

    HOLLA! Totally agree.

But for real, yeah. I totally agree about switching it up. I eat nearly the same number of calories every day, regardless of what I'm actually consuming (hot dogs and beer, versus cottage cheese and juice) and I ALWAYS feel/look better when I'm eating healthy stuff. I also never eat 3 meals a day - it's almost always 4-5 smaller "meals". It helps stabiliize your metabolism and you're never hungry.

And if you're into it, juicing is absolutely the best thing since sliced (whole wheat) bread. :)

And btw total sidenote butterfly - I made it out of work the last two days for yoga! However, last night the instructor got sick in the middle of class which totally ruined it for me because I like having guidance, even when I know what I'm doing. It was about 45 min into the class, so I only really lost 15 min (it was a one hour power vinyasa), but I still felt cheated. I'm going to hot vinyasa tonight with a friend. :)

  • Putting on 1 pound of fat would mean that you would have had to have eaten an excess for 3500 calories on top what your body has used for energy.  So get real with yourself... did you really eat enough to have put on a legit 4 lbs of fat?  Doubt it.  So, relax!

Ditto butterfly jumper on tracking your measurements.  Only weigh yourself a few times a month... our weight fluctuates on a daily basis.

Moving forward, definitely track your calories.  Include 30 minutes of cardio at least 3-4 times a week (walking is perfect).. gradually step up your intensity.. throw in some strength workouts.  Cut out hydrogenated fats, white bread/sugar/rice/potatoes, reduce/eliminate all sugar (fake and real).  Focus on eating lean, whole, natural.  My trainer told me if I want a drink (beer or wine) go have a quickie with FI instead... alcohol is a diet ruiner.

Just take care of your kidney issue first... that's priority.  Worry about your weight after you're cleared up.

YAY! i am so happy you made it two days in a row!! i would be devastated if my teacher left in the middle of class, i am not sure i have ever had that happen haha!!! enjoy your class tonight - sweat dates with friends are the best :)

but yes....juicing is da bomb.....so is eating healthy and in small doses....i would also make sure you get good doses of protein in. my fiance says he notices a difference in me when i am trying to be healthy, but skipping out on proteins. it just doesn't work. for me, i need to continue drinking milk and having lean protein at night regardless of how healthy i am trying to be.
  • This may sound dumb, but I got a SodaStream for my Bridal Shower.  Everyone teased me (including FI) that I wouldn't use it, but I am OBSESSED! I fill two 1 liter bottles full of water, I carbonate it and then put in about half a cup of diet (low sugar) grape juice in it for flavor. I make sure I have both bottles done before I leave from work in the evening. I have completely cut out soda, (even diet which was harmful too) and I swear it still tricks my brain into thinking I had a treat.   (I shake things up sometimes and use a little OJ or lemon juice)  Flat water has always bored me.

I am drinking tons more water, and unexpectedly my skin has been better than ever.  I always thought it wasn't really true that water made that big of a difference in your skin, but I was WRONG.  I'll be 32 soon, and when I wash my face in the morning it just feels plumper and smoother.  I've shocked myself.

I also learned that often when you think your hungry its actually your brain telling you that you are dehydrated.  Keeping myself hydrated has prevented me from wanting to snack as much.

BTW- We are all are own worst critics, and while you may see a difference between the weights you mentioned above, I think in the eyes of your hubby and your guest you will be equally beautiful either way.
  • Thank you all so much for the advice and encouragement.  The diet is no carbs, mostly protein and certain fruits and veggies.  I know weight can fluctuate day to day which is why I wasn't freaking out until it stayed up.  I also take measurements, but I've been my goal weight before so in order to fit into the clothes in my closet, I have to be within 5 pounds of it.  The thing that frustrates me the most is that I don't carry much weight in my torso so I have to get to 130 (at which point my ribs stick out more than my boobs) before I start losing any in my thighs or arms and my arms especially are what I don't want to be fat that day.  I started measuring at 140 and when I measured again at 133, I had lost 9.5 inches from my waist,  2.5 from my hips and 0 from my arms or thighs.

I can't really let the kidney thing keep me down because I've always dealt with this issue.  I had my left one removed 11 years ago after my daughter was born and for some reason, I go through these phases.  I'm careful because I only have one left, but I can't really let the pain slow me down too much because then I'd never get anything done.  This is all coming on the heels of having a cluster of hemmoragic cysts on my right ovary for 6 months that didn't rupture until the end of December and those did keep me from doing much about 2 weeks out of every month which is what caused the weight gain in the first place.  *SIGH*

I'm going to see about getting that app on my phone so I can make sure that I'm being as diligent as I think I am and hopefully things will change over the next week.  Maybe it is just a freak water thing and I'll wake up next week with those 4 pounds plus one or two more gone.  Thank you all again so much for your support and feedback!
