Tacky or useful?

So what is everyone's opinion on honeymoon registries? I have heard they are more common now with most couples living together before getting married so they don't really need all the normal things you would register for.

It allows you to register for suite upgrades, couples massages, outings, dinners, pretty much anything you can think of to do on your honeymoon.

So is this tacky or useful?

Re: Tacky or useful?

  • Tacky.  Also, my FI's good friend used this when he got married, and no one contributed.  Mostly, the couple just got money.

In general, I'm not a huge fan of registries.  We didn't register for our engagement party and got some beautiful gifts and money.  My parents never registered for their wedding, and received dozens of lovely gifts that they still use 28 years later. I don't particularly like telling people what to buy me.  As a guest, if I don't know the couple that well, I just give them money.  They can choose to use that on their honeymoon if they like.

We're only registering for nice dishes, flatware, and glasses.  Ours are rather cheap and mismatched currently...  This is only so that if people want to buy these types of gifts, they will know what our set is.

  • I don't like them at all.

I've also heard that it's not exactly what people think.

So you register for a massage. Uncle Bob buys you a $100 gift certificate for this.  What you end up getting is a check for $85 and the website used keeps $15.

This is what I've heard at least.

  • I would just think it would be awkward saying hey grandma can you buy me and FI a couples massage instead of the lovely dishes you wanted to get.

    Crazy awkward.

  • I think they could be useful. While Grandma might want to get you a nice set of dishes or towels, I think as a younger person going to a friend's wedding I would be more than happy to get them a special experience for their trip. I think younger people are more likely to give an experience gift. I would say just register for some regular stuff as well so people have lots of options.

One of my friends took her honeymoon three weeks after her wedding, so I got her a spa giftcard so she could go get her nails/feet, ect all re-done for her honeymoon and she loved it.
