Philadelphia / Main line Area - Outdoor Wedding Ceremony

We are considering the Philadelphia / Main line area for our wedding. Since neither of us is very religious or tied to a specific area I'd love to find a venue that just feels right for us.  We would like an outdoor ceremony (weather permitting) followed by an indoor reception.  We are pretty open to the venue style...I've taken a look at various websites for country clubs, wineries, and old mansions.  Our guest count will be 150-200 so we'd need space to accomodate that which seems a bit more challenging that I initially had expected...

Does anyone have any recommendations for an outdoor wedding venue in this area?  Would love to get tips from people who are more familiar with the area than us!  We have primarily attended weddings in New England and NY.

Re: Philadelphia / Main line Area - Outdoor Wedding Ceremony

  • I am having my June wedding at Welkinweir Estate near the Exton/Pottstown area (about 1 hour outside Philly). They have a few lovely garden locations that you can chose from for the ceremony and reception is under a large semi-permanent tent that overlooks a pond - really really pretty! Here is the website if you are interested:http://welkinweir.org/rentals.html
Another thing that sold this place for me is that they are environmentally friendly :-)
  • We're getting married at Tyler Arboretum in Media, PA  http://www.tylerarboretum.org  (It backs right up to Ridley Creek State Park if that helps).  They have 5 locations you can choose from for the ceremony site (we chose the Magnolia Grove)

They have a great space for the cocktail hour and that's about 100 feet from the reception site.  The reception area is 1/2 indoor 1/2 out, but all is covered either by the barn or under the permanent tent they have in place (my brothers we're having a fit because they didnt want to get rained on or be without AC, luckily this set up keeps them happy on both fronts!)

The grounds are beautiful and guests can get there whenever they want the day of to enjoy the grounds (not that my family is particularly punctual, but the option is still nice) and everything was in one location and walkable, yet each site is unique.  My family also has a number of people who have a tough time walking and for them they have a golf cart available.

Hope your venue search goes well!

  • Take a look at the Aldie Mansion in Doylestown.  I'm getting married there in June!  It is a historic building with lots of character.  The outdoor ceremony options are what sold me on the venue. Heres a link with some photos http://partyspace.com/provider/detail/765. Jeffery A. Miller is the exclusive caterer.  We did our tasting last August and I cant wait to eat the food again in June!  All fresh, made from scratch.  I think everyone is going to be really happy.
  • Wayne Art Center alllll the way! It is a fantastic venue. Sure to be a memorable one for you and your guests!!! Outdoor garden area for the ceremony AND beautiful galleries for dining, dancing and gallery space for indoor wedding if weather doesn't cooperate. http://partyspace.com/philadelphia/delawarecountyweddings/unique/wayneartcenter/? We fell in love with it as soon as we went for a visit. They are exclusive with Jeffrey Miller Catering and the food is WORTH every cent. Made fresh. Using local food. Just so worth it. We are so happy with our choice and looking forward to celebrating with our friends and family!!!
  • Thanks everyone! I've taken a look at all of these venues and they are all on my "list"...ever growing list I might add!  haha. Quick questions...we're going to have several out of town guests.  Does Aldie or Wayne Art Center have convenience lodging options nearby? Also we'll likely have 150-170 guests....is this too many for either of these spots?  I've read wonderful things about Jeffrey Miller Catering so REALLY hoping we settle on a venue that allows us to use them!

Oh and did any of you have an "after party" on site or at a nearby hotel?  We'll have a decent group of friends who may want to continue the celebration later into the night so wanted to see if we'd have that option at least....:)
