Rehearsal Dinner/Happy Hour

Hi all

We are getting married in September and half of the guests will be flying in from out of state. WE already planned a post wedding brunch so expenses are getting out of control with the wedding and brunch. I feel like we should do something that Friday night though or so people tell me , is it tacky to notify everyone that my fiancee and I will at the hotel bar for a  certain amount of time and pay for the first drink? If yes, how would you even say that   so they know we aren't hosting anything? Has anyone else run into this? Thanks so much, i am frustrated not knowing how to handle.

First, you don't need to host anything on Friday night.  It's nice if you can, but it's not required.

We are having some guests coming in on Thursday before the wedding, and we've said, okay, we'll let you know where we're going to dinner, and whoever wants to can meet up there. It's totally fine to just let that circulate by word of mouth, but don't invite anyone to anything.  That implies a hosted event.

As hlq said.  Just spread where you'll be by word of mouth, any more formal invitation implies a hosted event.  It's nice if you want to buy people drinks, although not necessary.  I don't think you need to tell people that in advance; it'll be a nice perk if their first drink is free, but I don't think that's what they're coming for (more to see you), and you're hosting plenty of events.

You could also buy some appetizers/snacks and let people buy their own drinks.  It'd probably be cheaper for you to just buy a few plates of mozzarella sticks, nachos, etc., and that's what I would appreciate more as a guest (I'm not a big drinker, and I like to have something to snack on, but wouldn't order a whole thing for myself).

No, you don't need to formally host anything.  Guests staying at the hotel will most likely congrgate at the bar anyways.  Like PP, you could just order some apps and call it good.
