Any tips for losing a small amount of weight?

A lot of the posters on here seem to be brides with a big weight-loss goal (30-50 lbs.).  I admire these ladies for the work they're putting in and the successes they achieve.  But my goal is much smaller - when I got engaged in August, I weighed 132 lbs.  I'm now down to 128, but I'd like to get to 120 for my September 2012 wedding.  Any advice on how to get those last few pounds whittled away, and staying slim?  I have an active lifestyle and try to do bodyrock.tv exercises several times per week, but I think I need an extra boost.  Thanks in advance!

Re: Any tips for losing a small amount of weight?

  • I don't do any workouts at all...maybe this is my problem. What would be the best to start with? I live about a 1.5 mile walk to work (in the city, 35 minute walk), but I usually take the subway. Would walking to and from work help? I also have a gym in my apartment building.

  • I think walking to work would be a GREAT idea. 1 1/2 miles that would be great.  I want to drop 10 pounds.  I'm small framed, so 10 pounds would make a HUGE difference.  I just need to find the inspiration to start something - walking, aerobics...
  • (Looks like our posts are getting all jumbled again)

Yeah, if I walked there and back it would be about 3 miles a day, or about an hour of walking. That would be a HUGE improvement over what I've currently doing (eating chips on the couch). I can't really run/do cardio because I have a heart condition, but walking is fine.

@mrsanthony- I agree, 10 pounds is a lot on a small frame. I'm only 5'1'' so 10 pounds is like a jeans size and a half on me. After I went from 124 to 131, I had to go back to my old jeans :(

  • The last few pounds are notoriously the hardest so don't get discouraged.

My first question is: Are you sure 120 is a realistic goal for your body?

My second question is: What are your eating habits like?

Oh my gosh, we are totally in the same boat! I am also getting married in Sept 2012 and want to be at 120!! I am going slow, and am trying to loose 1lb a week, then I will just maintain until the wedding. I am preparing my breakfast/lunch at the begining of the week and freezing it in individual containers, then I move it to the fridge the night before.
    Breakfast: Steel Cut Oats/Blueberries/Walnuts/Almond Milk
    Snack: Apple
    Lunch: Black Bean Soup
Snack: 1 slice whole wheat bread, 1/2 Avocado
Dinner: Whatever! (within reason, but I don't want to starve my fiance, so I usually make a normal meal and watch my portion size)

That is totally an example, I switch it up every week. But it saves money, and keeps things a little less frantic in the morning! The thing that I am worried about is the holidays, because loosing 8lbs isn't bad, but if we gain weight over the holidays, then YIKES! So I just want to stay at 128 through Jan 1, then start the 1lb per week. Don't try to do it all at once, you have PLENTY of time, but I think it is definitely best to start the slow process early, rather than stressing in August!

<div>I'm in the same boat.  I'm about your size, and 120 is my goal weight as well.  I'm down from about 139 earlier this year, and I'm finding this last 7 pounds nearly impossible to lose.  I'm doing everything right and the weight just isn't coming off.</div><div>
</div><div>So, I know that's not helpful for you at all since I really have no advice at all, but I thought you might like to know that I'm right there with you.  :)</div>
  • I'm in the same boat also! I'm about 130 pounds right now (sadface), but I was around 124 at this time last year and I felt much better at that weight. I'd really like to be at 120 for the wedding. I'm just a hair shy of 5'2'' so 120 is definitely a perfectly healthy weight.

Losing those last 5-10 pounds drives me NUTS when you are so close to your goal. I feel like every time I lose the 5 pounds or so, I have a weekend where I do nothing but eat and it all comes back :(

  • Tip from someone who has lost a lot, but still has a lot to go. If you're active and you're not losing anything else, it's because your body has gotten used to your workout. Once your body gets used to what you're doing, you stop burning as much fat. Do something different every day, and you'll see results. I change my workout on a weekly basis to keep from plateauing.
  • Ditto Anna on both points.

Also, maybe you should try using your measurements (waist, hips, neck) to track weight loss instead of the scale.  You might be toning and gaining muscle, but not losing pounds.  Focus on how your clothes fit your body instead.

    Hope that helps!

  • I am in a very similar boat too - I got engaged at about 124 but I'd like to be about 118/117 for my wedding (I'm not unhealty just really really short and petite). I have been using my fitness pal to track my calories. Since it only has options to maintain, lose 1/2 lb a week or lose 1 lb a week - I saw what it required for maintain and 1/2 lb and cut it in half so essentially I've been doing 1/4 a lb a week and it's worked great! You can enter your own calorie number in settings. I'm down to 121ish now and haven't really felt deprived t all. It's slow but it works for me because the calories allowed for 1/2 a lb a week were just too low. I basically maintained my same work out, except I now try to walk the dogs in the am and pm (instead of splitting with fiancé) for a little extra cardio and I plan on starting jilians 30 day after the holidays. I'd also recommend using your measurements because those sometimes go down when the scale doesn't. Also if you're on my fitness pal my name is quiggles - you can ads me to help each other stay motivated! GL!

This right here is your issue. You need to incorporate some cario and weight training into your daily routine in order to drop those last lbs. Id also suggest if you dont do this already, carefully watch your calories.

I started at 130 lbs last yr this time, got down to 118 by May and it was a healthy way of doing it. I watched everything I ate, cut out fast food, preservatives, and just ate clean. I ran 4-5 days a week and did strength training three days a week.

Currently I gained some of it back since I haven't run since my last half marathon in September but I already registered myself for one in April and May so now I know I have to start training again no later then Jan 1.

  • Ok so this thread got confusing since the posts are all out of order.

But for those that responded directly to my question: I'm glad to know I'm not the only one!  I'm 5'4", so I don't think 120 would be too thin.  My eating habits are pretty good, but there's definitely room for improvement.  I'm vegetarian, eat my share of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and healthy fats.  I think I need to work on finding more protein in my diet, and my sweet tooth definitely takes over from time to time.  Is it bad that I want a square of chocolate every single day? lolol.

Does anyone have tips for ways to mix up my workout schedule?  My job is very active already, but my body is adapted to all of the work I do.  I've enjoyed the bodyrock workouts because they're quick and intense and I can feel the effects the next day.  I really like to rock climb, but it's hard to coordinate with someone to pair-up with at the gym.

It's so nice to have such a supportive group of ladies here! :)
  • Hopefully this post follows yours... How about a long bikeride on the weekends? You can ride a bike all day, burn lots of calories, and not be too exhausted afterwards. Or hiking? I guess that depends on your area...

  • If you're vegetarian have you ever thought of going vegan? I dropped about 4 lbs in a month when I went vegan without even trying, or even just cutting back on the dairy and eggs? Just a thought. Like above (hopefully) I love going on long walks on the weekends - I take the dogs, sometimes fi comes. I mean like 2-3 hour walks. If you have a gym I'd say try new classes you haven't done to mix it up, Zumba, ballet, spinning, yoga. Or even get new videos you wouldn't usually try?
