Ring Question....

Ok, sorry if this gets long.....

I have been engaged since March of 2011 and am getting married in April of this year. I have a white gold ring that I love, but I am having some issues that I need a little feedback on.

I know that I have an allergy to Nickle with my ears, but I have never had any other issues with rings or necklaces. I have however started to have some issues with my ring finger.

I have tried to read about the reaction, but I am not sure if that is what I am seeing.

I have noticed lately that I am getting a painful red ring around my finger. The odd part is it's not where my ring sits, it's along my knuckle line.(My ring fits loose because I need it to, to fit past my knuckle.) Where the red marks are at is where my ring would fit the snuggest on my finger. It hurts and it red, and is starting to almost have a raised scare. I even have a crack on my knuckle. This all started about a week ago and is gettign worse.  I also feel like my ring is starting to fit tighter.

I generally have to get my ring replated every couple of months, and it is about due, but I haven't had this time of reaction in the year I've had it.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this? I am a little thrown off that I've had it a year and that it's around my knuckle....

Thanks!

Re: Ring Question....

  • Step 1:  Stop wearing your ring for a few days and see if the redness goes away.  If it's never happened before, then chances are it could be from something else.

Step 2:  You could try moving the ring to a different finger (ring finger on your other hand?) to see if you have any reaction there.  I would run the ring under hot water and lightly scrub it with soap and a soft toothbrush FIRST just in case you somehow got some kind of irritant on your ring and that's what causing the redness.

If all else fails, then you should try going to see a dermatologist.

  • Could you go a week or so without wearing it? That might pinpoint if the reaction you're having on your knuckle is because of your ring or not. It's weird that it's showing up not where you wear your ring, but if it gets kinda caught there when you put it on, that might explain something. If it doesn't go down after a few days of not wearing your ring, I'd see a doctor. If you don't want to go without your ring, put it on a chain and wear it like a necklace for a litte while.

  • See that's what I feel it odd is that it's not under my ring.... I don't wear my ring most of the day as it is because of work. I do tend to sleep with it though, and the mornings is when the red is the worst so far.

I can't wear it on my other hand or other fingers, my left hand ring finger is smaller than my right.

I am going to take it in for replating tonight, so I won't have it for a week. I will be able to see some from that.

I may ask when I take it in if they have ever seen this happen.  My ring is only 14kt gold, I usually have to wear 18kt earings.

    I don't know, I really hope it's not my ring. :(

  • If you're sleeping in your ring and it moves up and down, that might be why it's on your knuckle.

  • It could be stress related, if there are bumps as well. I am not sensitive to most metals, but when I'm under stress my body breaks out in areas where I wear jewelry daily (ie my ring finger.) Like everyone has said, don't wear it for a few days. I would suggest using bag balm or good quality lotion on your finger for a few days as well, to help reduce the redness and swelling.
  • I'd take it off when you sleep. Mine tends to spin and make a dent in the next finger over, if I fall asleep with it on, and that's just if I forget for one night; I imagine it'd be worse if I slept in it every night. Get a nice little jewelry box so it's secure, put a little corticosteroid cream on the finger for the next 3 or 4 nights (no longer), and see what happens.
