Bridesmaid dresess?

Hey everyone! :)

Okay so... so far i have 9 bridesmaids in my wedding. mostly all family and like 4 friends. but i am having a issue. i mentioned to some that i want them to all look beautiful that day so i want them to look elegant in long dresses. our wedding is for sept 22 2012 and i have 3 bridesmaids who are more on the thick side, i am as well. not fat but thick. and well my thinner friends are complaining already that they dont want to have to wear something that is all covered because someone is thicker.
for me that is disturbing. and upsets me. i am trying not to be a bridezilla, but i am also thinking of just going alone with my fiance or mom to pick out their brides maids dresses myslef and they will just have to do.

or????
what do you all think? our appt is jan 20th so i need to think fast!

  • Its your wedding, do what you think will look best over all, you will be the one looking at pictures in 10-20-30 years, not them. I was a bridesmaid in two weddings where we wore long dresses in the middle of summer (i thought it was rediculous) but the brides loved it, so thats what we did and we smiled through it.

  • I agree, these women are your nearest and dearest.  While you want them to be happy and feel comfortable you need to also be happy with the dresses they are wearing, too.

I am glad you are taking all of your bridesmaid's body types into consideration.  I have 5 skinny skinny bridesmaids and one girl who is perhaps a size 22-24.  I am catering to her in some ways because I KNOW the 5 girls will look beautiful in anything, but I need them all to be comfortable.  Pick a dress that will look good on the larger ladies and the smaller women will still look beautiful.

I only went shopping with my MOH.  We have narrowed down the options and I am showing my mom the final contenders and she and FI will help me make the final decision.

  • Is it possible to pick a line that has a few different styles or are you set on everyone wearing the same dress? I've seen many wedding parties in the same colour but dif styles and it looks so nice because each BM is comfortable in her own style.

I wouldn't just cut them out of the decision process. It is your day and ultimately your choice, but as much as they care for you and want the bride to be happy, you should care about them equally and appreciate their input and participation.

I know I say it a lot, but I'm so happy I have one attendant lol

i second the mismatched dresses idea. i wanted that from the get-go, even though my BM's are all sized 2-6. i know they have different styles and tastes and it was just easier because they could each pick it out on their own. plus now each one of them has a dress they actually like.
    Happily married since 9/1/2012!

  • I don't think I would cut them out of the process entirely but you are definitely not a Bridezilla if you set the rule of long dresses! As PP said is there a line/designer where you can chose a colour and fabric, stipulate they must be long and then let them pick? My maids all have the same skirt esentially, for example, but the top half of each dress is diferent. I love that a bit of their personalities shows through too!
  • I plan to choose 3 dresses from David's Bridal and 3 dresses from Alfred Angelo, and have them try them on.  I'll see which they like better and hope that its the same as I like.

I'm going with my sister ahead of time because she is the biggest of all of the girls and I want her to comfortable the most.

Also, the fact that your girls are mad that they have to cover up is ridiculous to me.  To me a bridesmaids dress should be long if its a formal wedding.  I hate short dresses but that's just personal preference.  I have a foot and knee phobia.

Also, long dresses in the summer are perfectly fine as long as its a lightweight fabric.
  • I picked a designer, length, color and fabric for my girls and let them choose between the 8 options so they all feel comfortable.

However, as long as you ask them their budget privately and stick within it, you are well within your rights to choose any dress you want them to wear. It's pretty unreasonable to think youre going to be able to get 9 girls to agree on anything -- and I would neber take a group that large shopping -- what a clsuter that would be!

  • I love the idea of your sister going with you, because my sister is on the thick side as well and she is my maid of honor. and i love the idea of just narrowing it down to 3 dresses and they decide from there!
    great ideas ladies!
    thanks! :)

  • I ditto everyone who said to pick a desinger, color, fabric, length, etc and let them pick the style they are comfortable in. I'm letting my girls pick whatever (from wherever) as long as it's short and sapphire/royal blue. I'm also letting them wear whatever jewelry and shoes they like and however they want their makeup and hair. I really don't care as long as they look like they go together and are comfortable. I trust in their skills. lol We've been friends for between 6-8 years! lol
  • I also picked a designer, color, length, and material and told the girls to pick whatever they wanted. I have 2 girls that are very tall and thin and 1 that is short and a size 22. The other 2 are in between. When I started thinking about dresses I picked one and thought I was going to have all the girls wear that one. Then I thought about all their different body types and budgets. Now I can accommodate their size and budget and I can still love the dresses.

I don't think you need to narrow it down to 3 styles.  What is the color?  Why don't you just tell them the fabric you like, and the color to get it in?  And please independently ask what their budgets are.

Just because you saw it on Four Weddings, doesn't mean it's a good idea.
