Non Honeymoon Trip-AI in Mexico

I am planning a mother/daughter trip to Mexico and was interested in AI. This is my relaxation trip so I like the idea of not having to book everything and my mom has been stressed out so I wanted to her to fully relax and not worry about anything.

I know most people in AI's are couples, so will this be weird? Any suggestions on non romantic resorts? Also, we like to snorkel so a good snorkel place close is a plus.

Most AIs that are adults only welcome any type of adult. The "couples only" resorts are primarily Couples (in Jamaica and Barbados) and Sandals (all over Caribbean but not Mexico). I have been to Secrets with a group and didn't feel out of sorts. I'd return to any of their properties with a friend or my mom without hesitation. However, not knowing your budget, I don't know what types of properties will fit best.

no. most AIs are NOT couples. some are but most arent.
what's your budget? for how long? do you want seclusion or close to other restaurants etc..?

Thanks for the replies. Budget is not an issue for us. I was hoping for a week long trip where we can lay out by the pool and drink yummy drinks. Maybe throw in a snorkling trip or some other activity to break it up. She is still hesitant about going to Mexico so we will probably stay in the resort for dinner.

We went to Cancun last year and it was great. We stayed at the Sun Palace which is an AI. It's a chain and they have other hotels very close so you can use their facilities as well.

The RIU resorts are not couples resorts either. Very cost effective but great option and amazing delicious drinks. :-)

We went to the GR Solaris in Cancun a few years ago, and it was family friendly. Great price for a new 4 star resort in the hotel zone and the beach area was fabulous! You also have full access to their sister resort the Royal Solaris which is a short walk up the beach.

that's not necessary but i understand some people who aren't informed feel like that.
fwiw i've been 12 times over the past 10 years, always leaave the resort and believe me-you have no reason to not leave the resort if youre in cancun or riviera maya. use common sense-dont wander into dark neighborhoods, stay on the main streets etc.. but please DO DO DO leave the resort. the restaurants in cancun and playa del carmen and tulum are great and it's easy to get a cab there and back if youre too far to walk. my 87 year old grandmother went this past december too and takes the public bus to church by herself.

Has anyone been to The Royal in Cancun?

I really wanted to go to Le Blanc, but when I said budget is not an issue, clearly I was mistaken.

My stepdad has been out of work these past few years and my brother got married and had a baby last year. My mom has been not only supporting her and my stepdad but my bro and his family (they are looking for work but not finding any). She is majorly stressing and I wanted to treat her to a week in Mexico where her only stress is figuring out what drink to order next. I really appreciate all the ideas. I would be lying if I said I wasn't enjoying all this "research".

Ali-I am hoping once she realizes how safe it is, she will want to go outside the resort. Growing up in Cali but living in Boston, I miss good Mexican food and I want to take advantage of it. Any suggestions on good restaurants?

We stayed at Secrets Silversands in Rivera Maya last fall and while it was adults only, it wasn't all couples. The food was amazing and the drinks were always flowing!
