NWR - College Grad Parties

FI's oldest son is graduating tomorrow from college. Is it the norm to have a college grad party??

BTW - FI is 13 years older than me. Not that it matters but thought I'd throw that in.

I went to a few college grad parties for my friends. Not nearly as many as HS grad parties though. I didn't have a college grad party- although my mom kept mentioning it to me, but I poo-pooed it.

Edit: We did go to nice dinner and celebrate college graduations (my me, my bro, & sis) but didn't have a party. And my idea of a 'grad party' is a rented tent in the backyard complete with catered fried chicken and mostachoili.

  • FMIL wanted to throw a college graduation party for FI and me but FI wasn't very excited about the idea so it never happened.

I went out to a nice restaurant with my family though.

  • I've been to one..and that was when I was in middle school...I've never really heard of them...I didn't have one for when I graduated..nor did I really want one...I think a nice BBQ or something would be nice though, especially if he was the first to graduate from college...but then that'll be expected for the others as well...maybe just immediate family..
  • My mom threw a graduation party for me in her backyard with just my closest friends and family.

If you don't throw him a party I think it would be nice to take him out to a really nice dinner and get him a nice graduation gift.  Graduating college is a huge accomplishment that I think should be celebrated big or small.

  • I've been to both HS and college graduation parties. My mom had both for me and we also had a smaller family-only party at a steakhouse in NY when I graduated from law school.

I also went to a law school grad party that was similar to a wedding for my gay BFF (I think his parents were essentially having a wedding for him in the event he never is able to get married). It was really fun.

In any event, celebrate in some way but you don't need to throw a party. Maybe just bring him to dinner? I think that would be really fun!

  • We had one with my parents, my best friend's parents, our grandparents and some close family members, plus my fiance and his family. It was not, by any means, a party - just some of our closest peeps celebrating together. This was the norm in my circle - to have small celebrations with family. I have never heard of having a big party/open house for college graduations - that is what we all did for high school.
  • They're very popular in my area/circle. It's normally a backyard BBQ like PP mentioned. I've always had a pretty good time. It's strange though because they usually come with VERY formal invitations but its a very informal gathering. How do you explain that? Like they always say that the invitation denotes attire but if I wore clothes to match a graduation invitation I'd look like an idiot... interesting.

  • All my siblings and I have had college graduation parties and I've been to them for all my friends as well. I don't think it's absolutely necessary but it would be nice to celebrate such an achievement.

  • I had one last year but it was mainly for my family that traveled to come see me graduate.  We had graduation type foods and just mingled with family I don't get to see all the time.
  • My parents threw me a college grad party.
