A Solemnity today...

. . . remember to get to Mass! ;-)

Love love love today's Gospel . . .
Luke 1: 26 - 38
26 In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth,
27 to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary.
28 And he came to her and said, "Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with you!"
29 But she was greatly troubled at the saying, and considered in her mind what sort of greeting this might be.
30 And the angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God.
31 And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus.
32 He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David,
33 and he will reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there will be no end."
34 And Mary said to the angel, "How shall this be, since I have no husband?"
35 And the angel said to her, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God.
36 And behold, your kinswoman Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son; and this is the sixth month with her who was called barren.
37 For with God nothing will be impossible."
38 And Mary said, "Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word." And the angel departed from her.

I love it, too. And the music for the Immaculate Conception is always awesome!

Going to mass later this evening. Yay!

I love the Gospel, but it confuses people as to what we are actually celebrating today.

    yup.
I think that every single priest should, every single year, mention at the beginning of his homily what we are actually celebrating! I'm sure they would get sick of it, but I betcha that at every single Mass, there's at least one person who has no idea!
(I'll never forget the mention in my college newspaper one year, "blah blah...the Immaculate Conception when Catholics celebrate the conception of Jesus!")

Hmm....I've never been to an Immaculate Conception mass that wasn't abundantly clear that it was about Mary's Immaculate Conception leaving her free of original sin and the stains of original sin to make her a perfect vessel for Jesus.

I'm not saying that the feast is not misunderstood among the general population and, probably, many under-catechised Catholics, but I am saying that the mass makes it clear for anyone who chooses to learn or pay attention or attend.

I kind of disagree. I think that one thing that *causes* the confusion is the Gospel itself, which talks about the conception of Jesus!

I get what you're saying, but all of the prayers, etc., are totally Marian in nature, which, I guess is what I was getting at -- not just the readings but the whole mass. The other readings are also clearly directed at the real meaning of the solemnity for one who knows what is going on. It's also tough to find a better reading, since Gabriel's greeting of "Hail, full of Grace" is so clearly directed at her Immaculate Conception, and it is not something that has obvious Biblical roots otherwise.

At any Immaculate Conception mass I've been to (and I'm not saying it's the rule, just my experience), the music and homily have also been very Marian.

I guess I'm saying one has to listen a little, but if s/he pay attention, it's hard -- in my opinion, anyway -- to miss.
