vistaprint "upload your own"?

has anyone had success with this for invitations?

I'm attempting to design my own invites in publisher (it appears that some fonts don't transfer well, so I think I have to use a pdf maker like cutepdf,) and...the "upload your own" option is... FREE on vistaprint? Is this really true? Does it look nice? How can they (vistaprint) afford that?! Why would anyone pay $1/invitation if you can design your own and upload for free? (or, even, if you're not design savy, base it off one of theirs!)

Is there something that I'm missing that makes this not such a nice option?
(I understand that to get the "10 for free," you just have to keep adding groups of 10 to your cart.)

I got my thank you cards using sets of 10 free per order and paid just over $4 each for shipping.  Always add the free pen to save a few more cents on shipping. (I don't know why, but it actually works!)  I played around with the design upload and from what I have read, I went with PowerPoint and saved the slide as a .JPG.  I created it about 4 times the size of the requirements so that when you upload the quality still looks good. HTH!

Typically the 10-for-free is only 10 of that one item per order.  You might be able to find similar products that you can get 10 of each though - like order 10 thank you cards, 10 postcards, whatever that are all the same size.

For uploading there is typically a one-time fee for an upload, I think it is about $6.  But there are frequently free-upload coupon codes that come out, so just wait for one of those.

Definitely check out jena.n.ross's site, she has tons of tricks, coupon codes, uploading advice etc.   http://vistaprint-goddess.weebly.com/

In terms of what might make VP "not such a nice option":  you have to design and make it yourself and depending on your computer/graphics/creativity this might be challenging; the print-type might not be what you want (letterpress/thermography/etc,); you may still need to order pocketfolds or belly bands or other things if you want those in your invitations.
  • meh. that's annoying. (I went and played around a bit more, and yes, you can only get one set of 10 for free per order.)

Since I'm going to need about 160 invites/inserts/reply cards (yes, we're having a pretty big wedding,) it seems like it would be better to just take my design to a professional printer. Then I can pick paper and printing types, see proofs, not have to worry about shipping, etc.

It's definitely a great site, you just have to work it right!   Sign up for their emails and you'll get different deals emailed to you almost every other day.  I'd recommend using the 100 free postcards rather than 10 free invites.  I'm not sure what the difference even is between them.  Maybe the size?  But I had an email that included free uploads and 100 free postcards.  I used it to do my Save the Dates.  They turned out beautifully!!   I paid an extra $9.99 to have the back also printed in color (otherwise the front is color but the back is gray/white).   I also added the 140 free return address labels (also with a free upload), so they match my STDs perfectly!   it was only $14 including shipping for 100 custom save the dates and matching address labels!   So awesome.  Definltely make sure you watch for the free uploads to be included in the offer email you pick, otherwise it is $5.49 per image that you upload.  They also have free templates you can use in Photoshop so you'll know your image is the right size.  I used the templates, and my uploads worked perfect, no adjustments needed.

Vistaprint can be a huge savings if you know how to work the system.  It's not straight forward.  Also, always work with images at least 300 dpi, but preferrably 600 dpi.  That way the quality won't disappoint.

I think the difference is that the postcards have to be glossy? I definitely don't want that! :-/

  • The postcards don't HAVE to be glossy, they offer recycled matte paper for $12.
