What should I do? Dream dress online - can't find it in person PIP

I really love Essense of Australia's bridal gowns. My favorite is:

But I can't find a boutique that has this dress. I have an appointment for early February at a boutique I've researched. I can try on similar styles from the same designer and then order the dress without ever having tried it on. Or I can pick a new dress (by the same designer).

I'm nervous! If I pick another dress am I always going to wonder? Has anyone else experienced this?

  • Have you ever tried on a wedding dress before? I found that what I was looking for changed quickly when I got to see and feel dresses on myself. I think it's awesome that you know what you love (and that dress is really beautiful!) so definitely bring that picture with you shopping. Try on similar dresses and see what happens! It will be easier to make your decision after you try on similar (and different!) dresses.

Don't stress about this. Choose a dress that you love and remember that it doesn't HAVE to be this dress just because you love the photo of it. I'm sure you'll choose something that you love like crazy.

  • OK that makes sense. I have never tried on a wedding dress, and my taste changed pretty drastically just from the few months that I've been looking at dresses online. I'll bring the pic. Thanks!

  • My experience was I had a dress that I really loved from the photo for a long time before I got engaged. I knew exactly which dress I wanted. I went to a different store to try on dresses for the first time, so that dress was not an option. I brought photos of it and other dresses that I liked. I soon forgot all about what I had liked in photos. I started to see what looked good on my body and what felt good to walk in. What felt like me. I ended up loving (and buying) a strapless Cinderella-type dress that poofs out at the bottom. I was never drawn to this type of dress in photos but when I put it on I just felt like 10/10 and my Moms and sisters had a huge reaction to it. It felt special. So since that was my experience I would advice anyone to try on lots of different types of dresses at a nice store that has good quality dresses. I told the salesgirl it was my first time trying on dresses and I didn't have anything in mind I just wanted to see how things looked. As I came out in different dresses I could start figuring out specifics, like, I do like this top but I don't like how the waist does this...and I narrowed it down.

  • I looked like a birthday cake in the dress I thought I wanted. The dress I ended up with was nothing I had even considered before, but it caught my eye in the store, tried it on, and never wanted to take it off.

  • I would call the boutique that carries the designer and see if they can order a sample. Every place a shopped had this option, although IIRC there was a fee (that got put towards a purchase).
  • definitely bring the picture; but even before that, have you looked at the Essence of Australia website!?  They may tell you what stores in your area carry their dresses.  Being in San Diego, I bet there are least some stores near LA that would carry them.

  • I agree with PPs.   If you haven't tried this dress on (or any wedding dress, for that matter), you have no way of knowing whether or not it is your "Dream Dress."   I think most of us were surprised by what we liked and what looked good on us when we went dress shopping.

Don't get me wrong, it's great to have an idea of what you like, and you should definitely take a few pictures of dresses that have caught your eye.  But don't be afraid to try on something different -- you might be surprised!!!!

  • Bring a picture with you to your appointment and the sales staff will help you find a similar gown.

Most stores will NOT order the sample for you to try on, (unless you buy it)
so you may want to call around to see which store has the exact dress you are looking for.
    Good luck to you!
