Plans are Crazy! Help!!

Okay, my fiance is in the US Navy.  He is finally able to come home for two weeks in December, so we want to have our Engagement Party on Christmas Eve.  My parents are not a big fan of that idea, but his family is fine with it and the rest of mine.  This will be the last time we are able to do this because the next time he comes home it will be day before our rehersal dinner.  What should I do?

Why are you parents not keen on the idea? Is it because it's on Christmas Eve?

The only thing with doing it that day is many people have other parties to attend already too such as family get togethers or with friends. Maybe this is what your parents are thinking? It's such a busy time of year for everyone. If he's home for 2 weeks, why not just pick another date?

I get why they are not keen with it. My parents wouldn't have been either. People usually have long standing plans on Christmas eve. Plan another day for when he is home. Also, you don't need to have an engagement party. I get wanting one, but it won't be horrible if you don't. Holidays are a tough time to plan a party since people usually already have so many things going on.

She asked this same question a month ago, and everyone told her it was not appropriate to host her own engagement party.  I guess she didn't like those answers.

I only remember because I answered her question on another board, and told her not to host her own engagement party :)

An engagement party isn't a requirement.  It's nice to have the families meet, but not essential.  We live 2000 miles from our families, and they leave 300 miles apart, so it's hard to all get together ever anyway.  We didn't have an engagement party, but we did have FI's Mom drive over to meet my parents while we were up visiting, and we hope to do the same with his Dad soon-ish.

Christmas Eve isn't ideal for an engagement party, there's so much else going on.  If you want the families to get together, great, but don't do it under the guise of "engagement party".  If that's the only time you can do it, then perhaps that's one thing that you might have to skip.

ETA:  I wrote half of this, went to make a few work calls, and finished it, so I missed all the comments you ladies made!  Ugh, some people lack class.

Honestly, if you weren't my brother or best friend, I wouldn't go to your engagement party on Christmas Eve. Christmas is huge for me and I spend it with my family.

Don't have an engagement party and problem solved!

Haha. I just hate when my advice isn't acknowledged even if they don't like it!

    Easy - Don't have one.

We haven't - and to make it all dramatic - our families wont meet until days before the wedding. BAHAHAH!! Well - I do admit that my mom and FMIL meet for a brief moment in 2009 when FI came home from deployment. But that is it.

You have two weeks to pick a date to have a party - pick another day, people have family time on Christmas eve and not to mention many go to church on Christmas eve.
