Vent: wrinkled dress costs to steam/press

I live in a different state than where I am getting married. I bought my dress where I live, got it altered, and took it in a suitcase to the state I'm getting married in. The dress was wrinkled when I got it it is even more wrinkled now.

Anyhoo, I saw on another board that it can cost as much as 100 to steam or press a wedding dress at a drycleaners. Now I'm freaking out about the cost. It does't help that I have major dress regret in the first place and the thought of sinking another 100 into a dress I didn't care for much to begin with is really depressing!

Does anyone have any suggestions for more affordable ways to get the wrinkles out of the dress? I'm considering buying a steamer just so I have something to show for the money, but then I would have to find a way to ship the steamer back to the state I live in. Argh!

  • i bought a hand held garmet steamer off of ebay for $20 that works great. not only can I steam out my dress, but all of my out of town guests, and my wedding party's dresses at no cost.  just a suggestion.
  • I registered for a hand-held garmet steamer on my registry. It was $50, more than some people would want to spend on it, but it's something that I can always use, every week. That way, it can fit in your suitcase!

  • I have seen other posts where they suggest hanging the dress in the bathroom while you take a hot shower. I did this with my veil and it worked perfectly.

    Hope this helps!

  • Thanks so much, ladies! I'm going to look into buying a hand held steamer. I love the idea that my bridesmaids can use it too if they need it. You have all been super helpful!

  • I've done the shower trick for other garments and it does work well.
I asked the lady doing my alterations if I could bring it in before the wedding for steaming and she told me they had done it once, but if I wanted to do it at home I could use a iron with a steam setting in place of a hand held steamer.  I would definitely follow the recommendation of using distilled water if I end up doing this!
