Officiant Dilemma!

My finance and I are not members of a church and would prefer a not-so-religious ceremony. My venue recommended a local judge and told me to contact him via email. Problem is, I don't know what to say in the e-mail.

I know that I need to include: my name (Victoria). ask if he is even available on our date (5-11-13). the name of the venue (Hazlehurst House). and that I'd like to talk with him to make sure he's a proper fit to our wedding.... I just don't know how to put it all together!!

Please help!! A sample e-mail would be perfect!! Thanks ya'll! Laughing

Re: Officiant Dilemma!

  • It sounds like you've got all the basics. You could draft one real quick and post for us to proofread if you like?

  • Yeah, I think you may be overthinking this a bit.  I agree with Becky: what you said above sounds just fine, but go ahead and throw it into an email if you would like us to proofread.

  • Dear _______,

My fiance and I are getting married on 5/11/13. You were recommended to us by Hazlehurst House which is where we are having our wedding and I'm wondering if you're available on our date. If so, could we please schedule an appointment to meet with you? I look forward to hearing back from you soon.

    Thank you,
    Victoria _____

I think that sounds fine. We are also having a judge do our ceremony.

  • Totally sounds fine.  I'm using a JP and we had a phone call (she's local to our venue, but we live over an hour away) to talk through her style and things that were important to us in our ceremony before we booked her.  The reason we went with her instead of some other JPs was that she drafted 3 different ceremonies for us.  Then we get to pick 1 and edit it so we know exactly what will be said the day of.  I really liked that about her because I didn't like the idea of writing my own vows, but I wanted the ceremony to be very personal.  So far I'm really happy with the drafts that I've seen.  If this sounds like something you'd like, then maybe it's a question to ask the judge to see if he's willing to work with you on the ceremony drafting?
  • sounds good - I contacted our officiant in September and had to draft a similar email (see below).   We met with him and decided he was a great fit :)  He's also offered to do follow up meetings to go over ceremony specifics.

    Hi ______,

My fiance, Andy and I are getting married on 5/11/13 at the xxxxxx  in Carpinteria.  We are currently looking for an officiant and you were highly recommended by ____ at xxxxxx.  Are you available to marry us on 5/11/13?  If so, we would love to meet you.  We live in xxxxxx so we can drive up to meet you.  We will be in Santa Barbara on Saturday 9/22 - if you are available we could meet you anytime that day.  If not, please let us know when is convenient for you and we can drive up.

We look forward to hearing from you.

    Thanks,
    _________
  • Thank you all so much for the advice. I used the sample from you hottovy, but tweaked it a bit. I realize that I was over thinking the situation, but once I started over thinking it, I couldn't stop! I knew you ladies would have great ideas! :) Happy planning!!
