Outdoor wedding, Games during cocktail hour inappropriate?

Hello All!

I am having a outdoor wedding with a vintage southern feel in MAY 2012. I was thinking during cocktail hour our guests (in addition to drinks and appetizers) could play games.I was considering making wedding cornhole sets. My guests and friends are mostly in their twenties.

Is this too casual for a wedding? or tacky? Am I setting my self up for it being mistaken as a "casual" event?

I have only been to one wedding ever, and the guests had to wait on the sidewalk for an hour for the bridal party to be done with pictures. It was so boring, and there was nothing to do! I want my guests to be happy!

- Thanks!

Thanks!

I think it would be a fun way to pass the time! If people want to play they can, if not they don't have to. Having the option would be a nice idea, and it would get people to socialize!
  • It's not tacky or inapropriate, but it's also not necessary.  Most people are fine for an hour as long as there is food to munch on, something to drink, and music.  People like to mingl and socialize.  So I wouldn't go overboard on games, because people might not want to play them.  But if it's easy to do, and doesn't cost much, then go for it!  It could be really fun, and you might end up with some cute pictures from it.

  • I'm having a wedding with a similar theme. I think cornhole and other games would be a great idea! And like PP said, that would make some very cute pictures and keep guests entertained.

I may have to steal this idea for my own wedding :)

  • We are having cornhole, and ping pong. I say go for it.

  • We had hula hoops, bubbles, bocce, and croquet. Not a ton of people played, but the ones who did loved that we had it there. We have some great pictures of a very serious friend of ours trying to hula hoop, so some people surprised us and had a really good time with it.

I think it's a great idea and am considering it myself. Like PPs said, I wouldn't spend too much on the games because people might not be interested. Also, I don't usually go to wedding dressed or expecting to play lawn games. But if you think that your crowd would enjoy it (as mine would) than go for it!

  • Our whole wedding is based on "picnic-style" games!  I'm very much looking forward to it, and I'd say if you want it, do it!  I hate being bored during cocktail hour.  Also, i'm looking forward to getting a picture of me in my ball gown trying to play croquet...
  • we are also having games!!!!!
  • Thank you everyone! Your feed-back was great!
  • We are doing lawn games as well- Traditionally the cocktail hour is my least favorite part of a wedding, so I wanted to mix things up!
  • that sounds like a fantastic idea!! i am so stealing :) is there a reason we should keep it to cocktail hour? i'd love to have them set up during the reception too, for those non-dancers :)

  • I'm having yard games like croquet, blongo ball, and bean bag toss to keep the guests entertained while the bridal party gets a ride on the boat around the lake for an hour.  With the guests we have coming, I know they'll be used and everyone will have fun with it!  There will always be people who aren't interested, but for the ones who are, it will be something that sets your day apart from all the others!
  • I was thinking of this too. Bocce ball, corn hole, horse shoes, and ladder toss. It is something fun to do, and if the pictures get done early the bride and groom can join, or take pictures playing them! I am all about fun and enjoying at my wedding!
