Harry Potter Wedding Theme

First off our wedding will be on 10/31/14 I know that its a long time away but we want to be done with college and are DIY'ing a lot for the wedding. Now to our crazy theme me and FI met at a halloween party and connected over our love of Harry Potter we even went to see the 1st half of Deathly Hallows for our first official date. We both agreed that we want a fun themed wedding and would love a Harry Potter theme. The problem is I dont want it too themey so that it looks like a sweet 16 or prom. Our colors will be purple, black, and sivler. We will have a sorting hat on the escort card table and the tables will be named after the houses. Our dessert buffet will have all the treats from the books and i found molds to make chocolate frogs and the boxes on an etsy store. my bouqet will be made of paper flowers purple, cream, and some made out of book pages from a spare HP book. (we have a few duplicates between us) with a black purple and silver wrap. If you have any ideas or suggestions please let me know. Trying to figure out what we want so we know how much to save.

Re: Harry Potter Wedding Theme

  • Fantastic Theme :) Great ideas so far. I'd go for the tent, like Bill and Fleur. If you could find a court yard to put it in that'd be so awesome!
     Other suggestions:
    - Processional could be a cover version of Hedwig's theme.
    - Instead of the standard first Corinthians use a reading from the books (check with the officiant first), HP you should be able to find something on the power of love and friendship being magical. I'd read any of the parts at the end where Dumbledore talks about love to start looking.
    - Invitations are a great place, you might be able to use art wording inspired from the books, movies, seal them with wax sealed.
    - Naming tables after houses is great! You could put pics from the movies in frames to announce which is which.
    - Photo booth with props is a really fun idea.
    - Think about going to the theme park in Florida or England/Scotland for your honeymoon.
    - MOH/ Best Man = Head Girl and Head Boy.
    - Signature drink names = Butterbeer, Fire Whiskey, Prof. Slughorn's Love Potion, Golden Snitch...
    - Instead of a limo you could rent a blue car like Mr. Weasley's in the 2nd book.

Congrats and have a great time planning :)
  • I love harry potter, and am way jealous of your theme!

If you wanted the reception to feel more grown up, look into maybe using old tomes, parchment rolls for table runners, lots of candles (the great hall comes to mind), and vases filled with quills, wands, and led lights to give a magical glow.

You could find stoneware crocks to look like small cauldrons (paint them black)- and have tulle with an electric LED light to look like little potions brewing.

Perhaps if you do a monogram, you could use the shape and background colors of the hogwarts crest, but instead of the house animals inside, you could place your monogram.

if your bridal party is also into HP, maybe look into getting them wands lol.  Alivan's wand shop is great (my FI and i both have our own wands and they're lovely!) and they have a section of wands with minor flaws in them which you can get for a steal.

escort cards/programs/table numbers: you could use inspiration from how the movie portrays the Daily Prophet- with the sideways writing and intricate layouts

As a photobooth prop, could could always DIY a mock up of the mirriror of erised frame; have stuffed animal owls, toads, cats, rats (but keep them contained to the photobooth area lest it look like a kids b'day party with all the toys lol).

Favors: bookmarks (of course!), small "potions" (you could relabel mini wines, sodas, or anything to show a HP name)

You could have each table be a different HP location (if you had the time, energy, resources and $): like honeydukes, olivanders, Hogsmeade, dumbledore's office, Weasley's joke shop, etc and have table-specific centerpieces.  (a lot of work, but it could look cool)

just throwing out ideas and hoping to get the creativity flowing!

best of luck! and have fun!

"What greater thing is there for two human souls than to feel that they are joined...to strengthen each other... to be one with each other in silent, unspeakable memories." -George Eliot
  • * Remembralls for the STDs
    * Invitations could look like Hogwarts letters
    * Cauldron cakes instead of a wedding cake

    Love the theme!
