Wanting to get rid of fat/flab

Ok. I need some advice. Let me first give a little  background. I was an athlete all my life and played basketball in college. I have always been a "big boned" girl with very muscular legs. I have slowly gained weight over the years. After I graduated college I gained 10 more pounds and get "flabby" instead of muscular. My wedding is in Sept. and I would like to be back to my athletic self by then. So my question is what type of workout should I be doing. I do not want to add muscle when I still have fat/pounds I want to lose. I have lost 10 lbs already and would like too lose 30 more before the wedding. (This is how much I weighed my freshman year of college and was in the best shape of my life). I have been doing P90x for now. I just dont want to be adding muscle to the fat, I would like to lose the fat first and then tone up. Is that even possible? You would think I would know exactly what I should be doing, but I was so active in highschool and college that this wasn't really an issue. I am counting calories and using my fitness pal but any extra workout advice will help! Thanks

  • Muscle burns more calories than fat, so adding muscle will most likely help and not hurt. From what I understand, is you don't want to add bulky muscle and that's fine. When doing P90X, do 12-15 reps not 8-10 and choose a weight that you will be stuggling on the last 2 reps. That will help you tone. Which version of P90X are you doing? I did classic and it worked well for me. If you want more cardio, you can always choose the lean version. Or do classic and add in some cardio on your own every other day. What other excercises do you enjoy? I've been mixing in some cardio group classes at the park district along with some P90X workouts. I'm also looking forward to beginning a bootcamp at my gym around April.

Keep tracking your calories. Make sure you are eating plenty of lean proteins, whole grains, veggies, fruits, ect. Are you following one of the P90X nutrition plans? I really liked the portion plan. For about 3 weeks, I used worksheets to track my portions. They definitely helped. Now, I have a feel for it and don't have to be a slave to the worksheets any longer. If you'd like them, l can e-mail them to you and the portion plan itself if you don't already have it.

I think your goal of 30 pounds by September is doable. Just stick with it!

You should be doing both weights and cardio. For example, do a 30 min upper body workout followed by 30 mins of cardio. The next day you can do 30 mins lower body and another 30 mins of cardio. For each 30 mins upper or lower body workout, pick out 5-6 exercises to do that work out opposing muscle groups: i.e. biceps complement the triceps, so you could do bicep curls and tricep dips. Make sure you're using a weight that is manageable yet challenging. By the time you get 3/4 of the way through your set of 12-15 it should be very difficult. At first, your body weight may be enough for things like squats.

Don't worry about the whole adding muscle when you have fat to lose... it doesn't work that way. Adding muscle will make your body use more calories, thereby using up your stored fat more quickly. Definitely continue with tracking your caloric intake, but don't be surprised if your weight goes up a little as you add muscle, since muscle is more dense than fat and therefore weighs more. You will lose weight overall though. It may be more useful to your goals to track your measurements.

The thing is, assuming you're female, you can't build bulky muscle without steroids or the like... don't be afraid of heavy weights.
