Church Ceremony - Reception to Follow at Later Date

MY FIANCE AND MYSELF WOULD LIKE TO HOLD A CHURCH CEREMONY BEFORE OUR WEDDING RECEPTION.  I HAVE JUST BECAME UNEMPLOYED AND OUR FINANCES HAVE BEEN COMPLETELY LIMITED TO HAVE A FORMAL WEDDING.  IS THIS ACCEPTABLE TO GUESTS?  IF WE SEND OUT INVITATIONS TO OUR GUESTS THAT STATE "RECEPTION TO FOLLOW AT A LATER DATE" WILL THIS BE TOO CHEESY?  CAN YOU PLEASE ASSIST ME WITH THE PROPER WORDING?

THANK YOU!

    Why are you yelling?
Just postpone everything or cut back on your expenditures.

  • WHAT ABOUT DOING A CAKE AND PUNCH RECEPTION?
  • WHY NOT JUST HAVE A SIMPLE CAKE AND PUNCH / BACKYARD RECEPTION FOLLOWING THE CEREMONY? YOU COULD TRY THE BUDGET BOARD FOR SOME MONEY SAVING IDEAS.
  • THERE'S NO RULE THAT SAYS THAT YOU NEED TO HAVE A FORMAL WEDDING!  HAVE WHAT YOU CAN AFFORD NOW, EVEN IF IT MEANS THAT IT'S A SMALLER EVENT.

  • Damn it, Jill. You beat me to it.
  • Why don't you get married at a later date? That way you can have the ceremony and reception the same day.

  • Wait....your wedding is in a month? You haven't sent out invites yet? At this point, everything should be settled and paid for I would think.

  • Sucrets, OP started it.
  • There's no need to shout.

Anyway, the point of the reception is that it is a thank you for your guests for attending your wedding, so it really should take place the same day.  It is unacceptable to have the reception "to follow at a later date."

Because you're worried about finances you can do some things to make the wedding more affordable: cut the guest list, have a simple cake a punch reception at a non-meal time.

Well, if you ever want people to actually answer your posts and take you seriously, then you should probably rethink that.

It's common knowledge that typing in all caps is poor netiquette.  It's the equivalent of yelling and hard on the ol' eyes.

Netiquette is net (as in internet) + etiquette.  It's the "rules" of online communities, message boards, email, etc.  It's very standard.

  • Regarding my question earlier about your wedding being in a month....I could have sworn your bio said your wedding was on April 24, 2010.

So, is your wedding really in a month?

    NO!
  • I would wait until a later date if I were you.  It is important to be financially secure before you get married because money problems can cause some major issues in a marriage.
  • I think a cake & punch reception would be lovely.  Asking guests to travel at a later date for another wedding-related party seems like overkill to me.

  • How long have you been using a computer where you didn't know that typing in all caps = yelling?  That has been a standard for years.  It's why all caps and exclamation points need to be avoided unless necessary in email correspondence.
