Etiquette Question for the Moderator or anyone!

This came up on our local board. The poster was asking if Calligraphy was a must because of etiquette reasons. She had been told that it was.

Most of us replied that it was not a must because of etiquette. Then she asked if she could print labels. Most said no but one gal said she printed some fancy labels with Damask wrap around the envelope and she absolutely disagreed with the rest of us who said you must hand write them.

Mrs Retread: What is the etiquette rule? I thought it was that you must hand write the addresses on the outside of the envelopes, the inner envelopes and the RSVP envelopes.

I personally think it is a breech of etiquette to print labels, am I correct?

I have received wedding invitations with labels. In this day and age, I wouldn't be offended by it.

I used a fountain pen to hand address my envelopes. I was going to do calligraphy but those on this board stated that it wasn't necessary. I realize brides are busy these days with life and such but I still believe it's important to hand address formal invitations, but that is just me.

We had our RSVP return envelopes printed with our address.

Me personally if it's casual, printed labels are fine.

Our wedding is more formal than not... so hand addressed invitations...

I have pretty nice handwriting if I take my time. I really want the envelopes to look nice, but also understand that it's possible to get really great script on envelopes these days, or on wrap around labels.

I'm going to take my time, I actually bought a great pen (not cartridge or calligraphy) to hand write my envelopes. Lucky for me, I have extra envelopes.

I just bought a calligraphy pen and started writing them out that way. I'm not a calligrapher by any means, but it adds a little flourish to my writing that I like. However, CALLIGRAPHY itself is not required. The general rule is, you're supposed to at least handwrite the envelopes for your invites. It doesn't have to be calligraphy though, just neatly handwritten.

We are sending our invites in boxes. I was wanting to do a wrap around label with a graphic design of some sort on it, which also seals the boxes. How do I do the wrap around labels AND hand address them? It is a formal invitation.

Oh thank goodness!

I literally just ran all my envelopes thru the printer (using a fancy schmancy scripty font) when I read this thread! I was a bit panicked!

I think it is nice if they are done by hand but I haven't given demerits for pre-printed envelopes either. Labels however would be kinda lame though.

I ended up using a beautiful font with the printer...quite honestly I got a lot of calls asking me who did the calligraphy...they didnt believe me when I said it was from the computer.....

My first wedding we had a calligrapher with gorgeous writing who did all the envelopes, but this time I really didnt want to spend the money on a calligrapher and although I have beautiful writing, I really did not have the time to do each set of envelopes by hand.....

We did not have a black tie affair and I was extremely happy with the outcome

I think the ettiquette books need to re wriiten to account for the technology that is available in todays bridal markets...

as far as labels...NO NO and NO...:) imo...:)

I'm going computer printing all the way - I made my own invitations - my third, his second. We're not that formal in real life. We won't do it now either. This is about family and friends getting together to celebrate our love. We decided to not be too formal! Don't want to sink money into trivia. We will make sure there is good food and beverages at the reception - plus we have many friends - From Europe to Hawaii, and everything in between. Our celebration will be a looooooong weekend. I don't think people are going to worry about the invites or other minutia. Family, Friends, that's what's important to us.
