Need Everything and Need Help

My fiance and I have virtually nothing. We had stuff in college and post-college but want to upgrade are pretty much starting from scratch. We're registering at Macy's and BBB. Feel fee to comment about vacuums, cookware, whatever your heart desires! Thank you :)

Re: Need Everything and Need Help

  • what would you be looking for?  we could comment about all sorts of things, but it depends on your style/attitude about some items.

for example: i can tell you my cookware that i have and love, but we cook A LOT and enjoy quality items.  if you don't cook a lot, i might not reccommend it.

what items are most important to you, and what qualities are you looking for in them?

Macy's is my preference for almost everything except small appliances, knives, and kitchen gadgets.  In general I think their bedding and bath stuff is much nicer than BBB (hotel collection is pricey but incredible), and they sell more dinnerware and china sets in-store than most BBBs do.  That's nice for guests shopping for your shower or who want to see something in person before they buy.

I prefer BBB for kitchen gadgets, knives, and appliances because they tend to sell a wider variety in store than Macy's does, and the coupons work for most kitchen brands (whereas they do not work for many china/dinnerware brands).  The major exception to this is that the coupons don't work for all-clad, breville, or henckles, all of which are pricier brands.

What kind of comments do you want? Brands?  Because most of the items you will need have brands that all the consultants try to get you to register for that cost twice as much as comparable brands that are just as nice but less expensive.  For instance, registry consultants will try to upsell you on all-clad cookware.  It is very nice, but Calphalon is just as good and half the price (regardless I would look for a stainless steel line that is a tri-ply set - very sensitive to heat and can be put in the dishwasher).  Everybody loves the dyson vacuums but they are about $500, and the $200 shark gets better reviews on amazon.

For small appliances, kitchenaid and calphalon are pretty solid brands (though KA has started to drop the ball on certain things like their toasters and coffeemakers) - again I would browse amazon for a wide range of reviews.

You did not say you were registered at pottery barn but that's actually my favorite store for bedding, towels, and other linens.  Between Macy's and BBB I would definitely pick Macy's, but maybe investigate PB if you haven't looked into it.  Excellent quality, beautiful patterns, and great reviews.

  • I suggest Amazon. I've done a lot of research and many of the same items are considerably (up to 30ish%, some less from BBB because of coupons, but not everyone gets them/knows) cheaper. I just can't knowingly register for things that are cheaper somewhere else, but that's just me.

<div>This is certainly true for some things, but I personally have a couple issues with amazon registries - 1) you only get 30 days to return, and that's from the date the order is processed; 2) the prices fluctuate a LOT and 3) many people assume stuff is cheaper on amazon, and it's not.  I price checked literally every single thing that Amazon sold off of my registry and the only things that were cheaper were the appliances.  They were cheaper by about $10, and I only have 4 of them, so I decided not to mess with it.  </div>

  • Very true! I guess my stuff differed from yours a lot since some of my big things were like $40-$60 differen and smallwer things weren't as much, but still better (plus, the closets BBB or Target is 35 mins away so free shipping is a pull). So OP, it really depends. I suggest, like hoffse said, do a lot of research!
  • @scribe95: what safe did you get? We are looking for one.

OP, my favorite wedding gifts have been our fiestaware dishes and camping gear from REI.  We already had a lot of kitchen things but I'd say good pots/pans and good knives are a great place to start.  Nice sheets and towels also.
  • My favorite wedding gift was our dyson vacuum.
  • BBB has a checklist you can print, I think. I searched online for a complete wedding registry checklist and went from there.

[QUOTE]It really depends on what you two like. H and I love cooking and have a ton of nice cooking stuff, but we almost never bake and most of our baking stuff is stuff I bought at a garage sale when I was in college living off campus. If I were you, I'd just go room to room and list the stuff you'd like to upgrade. Think about stuff you use every day. I like nice cookware and good knives, they make a difference. If you like having people over for dinner formal tableware is nice too. Fun kitchen gadgets are fun. We use our ice cream maker once a week in the summer. N<strong>ew sheets and towels are always nice, and a set of matching bathroom things (shower curtain, soap dispenser, etc) isn't something I'd buy myself, but makes a house look more put together.

</strong></div><div>This is so true.  I think one reason my FI's apartment looks truly like a bachelor pad is because he has nothing that coordinates at all.  Not saying it all has to be matchy matchy but some general idea of color or pattern can really pull a room together.  Bathroom stuff can be pricey (for nice stuff), and I think it's a more popular wedding gift that some realize.</div><div>
</div><div>I will second the roomba - that thing is awesome.  Though I admit I use mine mostly to watch the cat go crazy.

Crate and Barrel has a checklist, and it's pretty extensive.  I think Macy's has one too. Just make sure to include items in different price points.
