It's all about the dress

Hey girls!  So my mom is shopping for dresses to wear to my wedding and she's struggling to decide if she should wear a short or long dress.  Is it still customary for the MOB to wear a long dress??  My ceremony will be an outdoor evening one at a country club, with the reception to follow indoors and it's in late May.  What do you think ladies??

I think your mother should pick a dress - whatever dress - she feels comfortable and beautiful in.

There are no rules about short vs long.  There is only her choice.

feel free to try both styles. id go for short or knee length if its in the summer though. more comfortable. try for cotton fabrics

She may want to go with a shorter dress due to the season, but it is really up to her and her preferences.

My grandma (mom figure-MOB for all wedding purposes) is self conscious of her legs due to spider veins so she picked a longer style, even though our wedding is in late April.

I agree with PPs, it's up to her what she feels comfortable in. If she wants a little guidance, consider the formality of the wedding and suggest that she wear something in line with that, if it will make her more comfortable (i.e. if the bridesmaid dresses are short, summery dresses, she may feel overdressed in a long gown). Ultimately as long as she feels comfortable and beautiful that's the most important thing. My mom hates dresses, I can't even think of a time when I've seen her in one besides old pictures. When I first got engaged she looked at bridal magazines and started to freak out because the MOB dresses were so formal and almost like prom dresses! I told her I could care less if she wore a dress or not. She'll probably wear black dressy pants and a nice flowy top, which is a style that she wears most days, is very flattering on her figure, and that she feels comfortable in.

I would ask what the MOG is wearing (if she has already chosen something) so that the lengths can match. (My mother is actually wearing a shorter, sleeveless "bridesmaid" dress instead of a "mother-of-the-bride" dress, so obviously I think whatever makes you and your mom happy is golden.)
