Help! Need to pick colors to go with dress blues!

Hey everyone! I just recently got engaged to a US Marine and I'm already itching to start the wedding plans! I could really use some help on picking colors that will go with his dress blues! I know I could go with red or blue, but I was hoping to be a little different (especially since those were my sister's colors when she married her Marine). I could really use some outside input! Thanks!

Re: Help! Need to pick colors to go with dress blues!

  • Take the uniiform out of it, and pick the colors you and your FI would like for your wedding.  They do not need to match his dress uniform.

Also, make sure that he wants to wear his dress uniform before you start planning around it.  Not all SMs want to get married in it, my H included, so just double check on that.

  • I second everything beach said. Like always. :-)

  • Ditto Beach. You don't need to have the colors match his uniform.  Pick colors you and your FI like, they will look great with the uniform no matter what. I personally think matching to the uniform ends up being boring, because like you said, it usually ends up being red.

Pick your colors to match venue/season/your preferences etc. For example, I had a beach wedding. My H did not wear his uniform (he's a Marine as well), and the colors I used were aqua/light pink/hot pink. It went perfectly with the season (summer) and the beach.

  • Ditto all the advice you've already gotten!!

and I'll add my perspective.. My H (also a Marine) wanted to wear his uniform and I chose the colors that I wanted based on our venue & the season (Red & Black for a December wedding).  Pick the colors you want.

Welcome to the board!! Tell us more about yourselves!  How long have you been together?  How long has he been in the MC?  What do you do?  any Pets?  How old are you guys?  How did he ask?

I still don't get why so many women want to match wedding colors to the men's uniforms. Would you want to match your dress too? The guy is just as important and like PPs said, it gets too boring and a bit matchy matchy. Go with a color you and your FI both like.
  • I agree with everyone else.  Stop trying to match his uniform.  A friend of mine married a Marine a few months ago.  They were married under a huge oak tree and used autumn colors like rusty orange, deep purples, dark reds and gold.  It was absolutely beautiful.

Oooooh that sounds gorgeous!  I love what we're planning for our wedding, but if I could have planned a different one, it would have been in the fall.  With outdoor fireplaces with blankets for people to sit around, and hot apple cider being served in mason jars, and apples in the centerpieces.

If I didn't have a beach wedding I would have done a winter wedding in my hometown. I know, total opposites, but I love winter colors.

  • I've been having the same dilemma, and then I came to the same conclusion as every one else. I've attended a ton of weddings, and the most important thing is that it matches the season! See what pallets of colors fit your dates, and then fit the blues to accent with those. I'm thinking fall. I can easily to a burnt red and orange, and that will just make the blues stand out more. Just a thought! Let us know what you decide!  Good luck!
  • Thanks for the advice everyone! He proposed on New Years Eve at midnight, so we are REALLY recently engaged. We've started talking about it, and IF we have a traditional wedding we would really like spring and he DOES want to wear his dress blues. However, thanks to the advice of my mother, the two of us might just go get married on a beach somewhere (cheaper than a big wedding, and honeymoon destination included!!!). I'm thinking a little white dress...
Ugh! There are so many options! I would love to have our family and friends with us, but there are so many that it's difficult to narrow it down to the people we're close to. Not to mention how many siblings/nieces/nephews we have combined! I feel compelled to somehow include them all in the ceremony!
