St. Lucia Honeymoon!

Hey there! I just booked my honeymoon for St. Lucia Sandals La Toc resort for this September. If anyone has ever been there before, can you recommend some excursions to do? We were looking into the ATV Adventure, Climbing the Pitons, St. Lucia Sunset Party Cruise and the St. Lucia rainforest canopy adventure. Does anyone have any feedback on either one of those? We only wanted to do 2 excusions, so I would like to do the two that are the best. Can you recommend anything to do that isn't given by the resort? I appreciate all of your input :) Thank you!

Re: St. Lucia Honeymoon!

  • We stayed at La Toc and LOVED it!  Our travel agent recommended a "local" tour guy to us for the tours "Joe Knows"--used Al.  She swore by them (and La Toc)-- we were really happy with the recommendation.   We really enjoyed our tours with them because they were a little smaller than the resort tours and cheaper!
We did the island tour one day (volcano, hot springs, snorkeling at the Pitons) and then hiked the Pitons.  I thought both were excellent.  (Climbing the Pitons is pretty intense, simply because of how hot it is.  Go early and you are fine.  Definitely bring hiking shoes, it's not a smooth walk.  You'll meet lots of fun locals on the trail.)
I don't have an email for Joe Knows-- we just met him on the beach.  Google them if you are interested or shoot me a PM and I can send you our TA's info.  (She's out of DC but works online.)
  • Is it only me, or Sandals gave me a crazy price for 5 nights and flights from jfk they asked almost 8,000? We inquired about a july trip, should we go on a different time to get a better price??? Thanks!! ;)

  • EWE - I guess it depends what room you are getting. We priced out September for one of the top rooms with a private pool from JFK and my final price was $7700. We cut out the pool but still had all the other amenities and we saved ourselves $1600. I guess it really depends on your preferences. I think the cheapest room with an ocean view was around $4100. Also, look at the airfare yourself. Sandals wanted to put us on a layover flight when there was a direct flight being offered by Jet Blue for our date or departure and return. When Sandals finally offered it to us, they wanted to charge us an additional $630 more than what Jet Blue was charging for the same flight. I told them this and they matched the price but you just have to do your research before booking.
  • I was also looking into honeymooning in St. Lucia in September! Is that not the prime hurricane/rainy season? Has anyone been there in September and can attest to this? Thanks!
  • Ewe- We are staying at La Toc in July and flying from Philly.. Our trip is about $5500 total.
  • Thanks a lot guys!!! :) I think i will do a little bit more reasearch :) We want to go somewhere nice but also want to buy a house so i guess we will have to compromise... :)

  • Our trip to SGL last month for seven nights in an ocean front penthouse conierge suite plus round trip flight from Philly was 6k.
  • Although I loved the mud bath and would recommend it I found St. Lucia dirty and shady.  There were beggers everywhere and they even knocked on the tour bus windows! I guess it's different if you stay in a closed resort.

Hmm that's intersting. When we stayed at the grande last month we walked all the way from the grande into gros islet about a half hr walk down a fairly busy main rd with no problems. We even walked around town a bit and found the locals to be very friendly. Yes, SL seems at times a bit run down but we didn't find it to be shady or dirty. No more dirty that Philly or NY that is.

I think that is anywhere you go. The same thing with Jamaica, Mexico and even Hawaii. There are SO many homeless people begging in Hawaii, when I went there, there were people on our boat that actually had their stuff stolen. I have never heard anything bad about St. Lucia that you wouldnt find anywhere else. The only thing I can say is there where the cruise ships dock for port, that was to be found not the greatest first impression of St. Lucia. But everyone that has stayed at the resorts didnt have anything bad to say. I guess it depends on your outlook.

While September is part of the peak season for hurricanes, I was told St. Lucia is somewhat on the outer rim of the hurricane belt that they hardly ever get hit. I spoke to two travel agents and one told me they have only gotten hit twice in the past 10 years and they hardly every have rain. I wouldn't go to the center of the belt during that time, but I am going to St. Lucia in September! I guess you can really risk bad weather anywhere in the Caribbean during those months.
  • " spoke to two travel agents and one told me they have only gotten hit twice in the past 10 years and they hardly every have rain. "

That is definitely not true - its like a rainforest there, they get a lot of rain.  Usually it is nice, then rain for an hour, then nice again.  When we were there we had kind of crappy weather in August, but I knew it would be a gamble.

I agree w/ Hoboken Bride - St. Lucia was gross - I wasn't really prepared for it.  I saw images of it on the Bachelor and we were paying a ton for the vacation I was expecting luxury. I've been to the DR and Jamaica, which are both supposedly poorer/more dangerous, but nothing was as shady as SL.

I dont want to scare you or be a debby downer, but I think I was so disappointed b/c I had unrealistic expectations.

Like Monkey Girl, we also stayed in Gros Islet/Rodney Bay.  I have never seen so many rats in my whole life.  the  We rented a car the whole time we were there and drove around the island - which was about 10x harder than you'd think navigating a 27 mi island would be.  I thought Marigot Bay was the nicest area.  Soufriere and Castries were both pits.

I did climb Gros Piton though and it was the highlight of my trip.  My fiance and I are both in pretty good shape and were beat the next day - we were both happy we did it towards the end of our trip since we were sore for a couple days!

    Good luck, have fun.
