Any Navy Brides?

My fiance is a retired/disabled (100% Service connected per the VA) sailor.  He served on the USS Virginia SSN774 as a CS and Diver, and is disabled due to developing schizophrenia while underway.  For our wedding, he wants to wear his uniform.  From what I understand, there are several options:

Full Dress White, large medals, no civilian equivalent listed  Link
Dinner Dress White, mini medals, equivalent to civilian black tie  Link
Service Dress White, ribbons, equivalent to civilian coat and tie  Link

He would prefer the Full Dress White, but is unsure what protocol requires.  The wedding is at 1pm, and civilians (all other guests) will be in shirt and tie.  But, he doesn't beleive SDW is formal enough.

Thoughts?

Re: Any Navy Brides?

  • H wore his blues for our wedding at 5:30 p.m.  We had ours outside and all of the people wore suits/ties and women wore dresses.  Again I am not too familar with the uniforms of the Navy.  There are many other women that would know more about the Navy's dress.

Good luck with planning and tell us more about your wedding planning.

  • Hi! Welcome!!  I was AD Navy myself, but my H is in the Marine Corps and I'm back to being a civilian!

Honestly, any sort of dress uniform should match the formality of the civilians.. KWIM?  Someone else may be able to give you better advice on this, but that's my take on it all..

    Welcome again!!

  • As a Navy Vet and soon to be Navy wife, you should know that his uniform should match the season. Fall-Winter is for BLUES, Spring-Summer is for WHITES. The exact dates of change over are different depending on the area. Also, Full Dress Uniform is best. Trust me, when you're in the Navy wearing regular dress is boring and annoying and you rarely get to wear full dress. Plus, it looks sooo much classier.
  • Thanks so much for all the responses!  Briana - the wedding is June 16, so we are good on the whites (at least, thats what FI says.).  I'm happy that it's full dress - I like the large medals.

OK wedding details - we are getting married in Upstate NY, at the church we are both members at.  It's a daytime wedding - 1pm ceremony, pics from 1:45 to 2:30, reception 3ish to 6 or so.  We each have one attendant, and there are a few ushers and my nephews are escorts, but no FG or RB.  The color scheme is pink and navy - country club meets the US Navy.  Flowers are mixed pink roses and alstromoeria.  I'm DIYing what I can - centerpieces, flowers, etc.
