  Save the dates (which are optional) go out 6-9 months prior to the wedding.

  
  

  I personally think engagement pictures should be taken closer to the engagement, but that's just me. We had ours taken about 1 year prior to when our wedding will be.

  engagement pictures can be done anytime really. If you prefer to wait until spring to have all the nice trees and flowers blooming thats up to you. fall is also a really nice time with all the trees changing colors and what not. For save the dates I would not suggest sending them out more the 9 months in advance cause often times people will still forget. You can also get them as magnets so people wont lose them and can put it on their fridges

  Congratulations!  Engagement photos can be done any time really.  We took our own photos for our STD postcards however and they turned out great.
  
  We were engaged May 2011 and will be married July 2012.  I really want e-photos outside in the mountains, so we probably have to wait until May or June 2012 when the snow melts.  That could be as little as one month before the wedding!

  It depends what you want to use the photos for.  If it's just for your personal use, you can do them any time.
  
  If you want to use them for STDs, then you'd want to do them at least 6-8+ months out since that's usually when STDs go out.  If you're having a destination wedding then STDs can go out earlier, more than 12 months so that people can make travel arrangements/book time off.
  
  If you're using them for an engagement announcement in the paper or something, you'd need to do them ASAP because that usually happens shortly after you get engaged.
  
  We got engaged in September, did pictures in October before the snow came.  Got married the next August.  We didn't send out STDs.

  I think you're probably "supposed" to do them closer to the beginning of your engagement, but I don't think it matters that much.  We didn't do ours right away, but I think more people usually do them shortly after getting engaged.
  
  My FI and I just took ours Sunday, and we've been engaged since August, and are getting married in 3 1/2 months.  We could care less about them, but they were free with our wedding photography package, so we decided to take advantage of getting some fun professional shots.
