MUA CHECK! Condo question now

Thanks ladies for your encouragement and advice to book Jessica and get my make up done at Olowalu. Now my sister has brought to my attention that I should book the condo. So the WC encouraged me to stay on the west side of the island. I was originally looking to stay in Kihei. The argument that the WC had was that mountain pass between Kihei and Olowalu. My family is staying in Kihei. I sent fiancé's family to lahaina since I know they drink and I don't want them to try to drive the mountain pass. My family and I don't drink so we can make the drive. It is cheaper to stay in Kihei but I wonder for wedding sake it is better to be in the west side of the island?

My family is booking a condo at the Kihei Alii Kai. I looked and the rates are reasonable.

What were your experiences or thoughts on this? I will need to be at Olowalu twice during my trip right? Once for rehearsal and the actual day.

We usually stay in West Maui anyway, but I agree that you should have them stay on West Maui as well. Last summer there were wildfires that blocked passage into/out of West Maui. This year there was an accident that backed up traffic into/out of West Maui. So I suggest staying on the West side in case of...anything! HTH...

My vote is for the west side as well. The drive isn't that bad from Kihei but the traffic and possible fires would block that road. Coming from Lahaina/Kaanapali it's a quick and pretty flat/straight drive.

For us, distance was absolutely a factor.  We really wanted to stay West but decided against it since Kaanapali to Kihei is about an hour on the road with no traffic.  It doesn't seem like much, but it adds up.  Especially as you get to rehearsal day, you're tired, and want to spend time with guests, and making the hour-long trip sounds less & less appealing.

    Consider also if:
    1) you want to make some runs to drop off decorations / drinks
    2) you need to get there early to set up (we went to tie chair ties that morning)
    3) you forget something in the condo that morning & need to get it

I stayed in Kihei and had no problems.  If there were a fire there is another way around the North shore (this is a slim chance - we were there in the driest months during firework season).  It's really only a 20 minute drive from South Kihei, not a big deal at all.  But, I simply prefer Kihei over the NorthWest side of the island.

You can't babysit everyone, and if someone chooses to drink then they are responsible for getting themselves home safely.  All of our guests understood that and kept control over their drinking or arranged to ride with someone else.

Stay where you want to stay - not where someone else suggests you stay.

And yes, twice is it.  When you go to the rehearsal bring all your goodies with and Cherise will take them then.  For the day of, you just show up and watch it all happen!

You can't really just pop into Olowalu any other time as there are other events going on.

Also, if people do decide to drink, too much to the point where they are unable to drive, cab fares to the Ka'anapali area will be much less than those going to Kihei. Plus if the majority of your guests stay in one area, they can carpool. I forget how big or small your wedding will be, but parking is somewhat limited and for those who do drink it's nice to have a DD if you don't grab a cab...
