Hiring a friend as a photographer?

I have a friend who offers wedding packages at between $200-500!  She is an amateur, but has done a handful of weddings.  These prices are irrestistable, but I'm hesitant as I've heard the photographer is something not to skimp on.  Any advice?

Re: Hiring a friend as a photographer?

  • I think the best advice here is, you get what you pay for.  If you want to hire an amateur and pay amateur prices, then expect amateur results.  Everyone has to start somewhere and there is that chance that you will get lucky with an up-and-coming photographer, but it's not a risk I would take, personally.
  • Ditto. Plus, if she's a friend then it will probably be even more important to her that you approve of her work. What if you don't like the pictures? Saving a few dollars (okay, several hundred dollars) isn't worth risking bad wedding pictures and a destroyed friendship IMO. Years from now are you gonna remember what you paid your photographer or what the pictures actually looked like?
  • If you really need to save the money, and this is where you've decided to do it, ok, but let me tell you, at my first wedding, we had my dad's friend do the photography.  He was an amateur photographer, it was more like a hobby I think.  He was our photographer, it was our wedding gift.  You definitely get what you paid for, because our photos were horrible.  The best ones were taken by other people with their personal cameras.
Luckily, I have no interest in those pictures as the marriage is over, just be very careful.  20, 30, 50 years from now, all you'll have is the pictures.  To save a bit of $$, we are choosing a photographer who will take the pictures, and provide us with a disc, so hopefully after the wedding and all of the expenses have died down, we can put together an album.

Don't skimp, hire a professional. You won't regret it. And if you hire your friend and she doesn't do a good job it could really affect your friendship.
