Torn between Excellence Playa Mujeres and free honeymoon

My FI and I booked our honeymoon at the Excellence Playa Mujeres in Cancun. We were really excited as we have never been on a nice vacation together. Just the other day my aunt told me she has a timeshare in Cancun at the Gran Melia resort. She has offered to my FI and I for our honeymoon. My FI and I are torn because we are trying to buy a house and having a wedding in the same year so a "free" honeymoon would be nice. On the other hand we were really looking forward to our stay at the Excellence. Any advice would be helpful.

Re: Torn between Excellence Playa Mujeres and free honeymoon

  • If you could, I would definitely get your money back for what was booked and go on the free one. I mean, it's still a tropical getaway to Mexico. You said it yourself... you're saving for a house and the wedding is costing moolah. I'd take the free one.
  • Is it possible to get your money back at all? Also consider that these are two completely different resorts. Excellence is one the higher end, adults only, well reviewed resorts in the Yucatan while the Gran Melia isn't adults only, and the reviews aren't so great. It looks beautiful. Would your aunt's timeshare get you AI at Gran Melia? Because they aren't a true AI. They offer a European plan, and an AI plan.
  • Yes, if we cancel our reservation we will not be charged and we did not have to put down a deposit. I will have to find out if the timeshare is AI. I read the reviews too and Gran Melia's review were not that great but Excellence got great reviews. That's another reason we are torn. This is a difficult decision.
     Undecided

  • My fiance and I have stayed at both and are getting married at Excellence Playa Mujeres next month. Here's the scoop...both are nice, but I'll give you our take. Melia- There are a few restaurants, all are good but you do need to make reservations and there can be upcharges for filet, lobster or other menu items. The atrium is gorgeous and very cool, but HOT. I know...you're thinking, "we're in Mexico, everything is hot", true, but it can be a bit overwhelming when you just want to hang out inside and cool off. The service is hit or miss...better if you tip them. (we were AI) Drinks are ok...not great. There are children there...can be a bit annoying. We found that we were either at the beach, pool or our room to cool off most of the time. There are timeshare people everywhere trying to get you to "tour" with them but they may not do this with you being that you'll probably have a different colored wristband and are already part of the timeshare group-which is in a different wing of the hotel, btw.. We enjoyed it and would go back, but not for our wedding or honeymoon.
Excellence PM- AMAZING! Every room is beautiful, the service is amazing and you can be as active or not active as you like. There is a ton to do so you'll not be bored. The restaurants are fantastic and we love the fact that you can just show up when you're hungry...or get room service.....and you can eat WHATEVER you want...no upcharges. Drinks were fantastic! The crowd was great...everyone having fun and you can be completely involved-couple pool races, kayak tours, dancing, cooking or Spanish lessons, or just wander down the beach, float around the lazy river or hang out and do nothing at all...and no charges for rafts, bali beds, hammocks etc. They have shows and activities each night if you want to partake...the casino night was a blast. They give you fake money to gamble with and you can win prizes. The spa is also incredible...the water ritual is TOTALLY worth doing. Suggestion-I would not get a swim up suite excellence club room...they are too close to the action so to speak and are not very private. A swim up Spa view is fine though...and a lot less expensive. We did a swim up Spa view last time we stayed and will have a roof top ocean view for our wedding. Both I'm sure are perfect.
Clearly, I'd go with Excellence for your honeymoon...you only get to do that once!Maybe you can see if you can take another trip down and stay at Melia another time. The upside to Melia is that you are in the middle of the hotel zone and it's a lot easier to leave the resort if you want to do other things, excursions, shopping, dinners etc. It's perfect for a vacation.
     When is your honeymoon???
  • That was a great post. thank you so much! our honeymoon is in november
