Just Engaged and Proposals

My Ring

So maybe this is a dumb question.  But is my ring supposed to get scratches?  I have been engaged for almost a week now and was inspecting my ring this afternoon and noticed a tiny scrach on the bottom of the band, close to my palm. Is this supposed to happen????? I love my ring and sad bc I feel like it's not perfect already.

Re: My Ring

  • I am newly engaged to an am wondering the same thing. My is platinum and I thought was top quality. I don't know but, I will be taking it to my jewler.
  • Platinum is a soft metal.  It is strong to hold your stones in place but it will get scratches.
  • My ring is white gold... should that get scratches?
  • Gold or platinum, jewlery are going to get scratches.  Especially rings since they are more prone to abuse since our hands do a lot of work.  I have white gold rings that I've worn and bracelets that have scrathes and blemishes on them.  Its wear and tear.  Now large dents and gouges are another issue.  But small surface scracthes are normal. Just be more aware of what you're doing with your hands.

  • Yes, my ring has scratches on it also... you really dont realize how many times a day you hit your hand on something.  The bottom of your hand it constantly holding something or possibly hitting different things... i work in a hospital and i notice how much more careful i am with grabbing things, but its almost impossible i think not to scratch the bottom.  But the jewelers usually do an awesome job when you go to get it cleaned, i can barely tell the bottom is scratched after its cleaned :)

  • All metals scratch.

When a gold ring gets scratches, it wears away a little of the metal. When the Platinum band scratches it only displaces the metal. Platinum never loses any weight, whereas a gold ring will get slightly lighter over time as the metal gets scratched off of the ring.

Your jeweler can make the ring look like new again, the process just depends on the metal.

  • My rings are white gold and they get scratches. I recently had them cleaned and rhodium dipped and noticed the scratches were gone. I just try to get them cleaned regularly and make sure I take them off if I am doing something that I know I will be prone to a lot of scratches or knicks.
  • Yes it's totally normal for your ring to have scratches.

  • Yup, my ring is all platinum and the bottom is scratched up like whoa (only 2 months engaged), but there's really nothing you can do about it.  When you have it cleaned, which you should NOT do often as it can loosen you prongs, they will polish it up for you and the scratches will be gone - they will come back of course, thought.  Just ask your jeweler for an everyday cleaner and you probably won't even notice the scratches.  I clean mine once a week and I don't even notice the scratches anymore, plus it's only all metal on the back, and all diamonds in the band so really the back is the only place you can see any imperfections, so I never even really notice it!  The most important part is keeping the diamond clean and you won't even think about the scratches when your diamond is blinding you (clean underneath, as that's where the light reflects from).  Good luck!
