Re: choosing your date- how did everyone pick theirs

  • We wanted a date in May and so we picked May 25th on Memorial Day weekend because majority of our guests are out of town so we wanted to give them wiggle room when it came to getting back to their hometowns.

  • Me and FI had already planned to go on a cruise next year May 12 which is a Sunday. Well when he proposed and we were trying to figure out dates it only made sense to get married the Saturday before and make the cruise our honeymoon. So May 11 it is.!

  • May is the only month where nothing is going on (birthdays, etc) except Memorial Day which we spend with our families anyway.
  • May...not too hot....not too cold!!  Just right!

  • We started out originally at December 27th, 2013 since my parents weren't okay with me graduating a whole year early.  Then after I explained how much money it would save for me to graduate early, since I'll have all of my requirements by May of next year, we moved the date to July 27th, 2013.  Then we found the barn and there was no way we were having an outdoor ceremony in July in South Carolina, so we decided on May.  My FI and I graduate on the 10th, so the 25th gave us enough time to graduate and move and get everything done before the wedding.

It's a silly series of decisions. We were debating this fall or next spring. We ruled out Nov-March because the wedding is in Buffalo (also ruled out when we were still considering Pittsburgh) and at least one family will have to travel. We didn't want a snow storm to prevent half the guests from getting there. We were leaning towards April and I wanted it on an even day. That left the weekend after Easter, which might be hard for some people, or 4/20, which I didn't think about until my fiance said "really!? Think about it. 420?" and I believe my response was "oh crap." We settled on May 4, which hopefully will mean nice weather and Star Wars day is a step up from weed day.

  • hahhaha i chose ewoks and chewbaca over weed anytime lol
  • I am May 4th too for a variety of reasons not knowing about the Star Wars day until May 4th this year (after we set the date) Ugh.  My fiance (who didn't know either) thinks its great.  Now I am enduring all my co-workers picking out Princess Leah costumes for my gown!  :-)
  • We began dating on May 24th, and thought it would be nice to celebrate 4 years together with our wedding on the 25th. =)
  • We originally wanted our anniversary this year which landed on a Saturday (April 21) but it was too soon after getting engaged. I then found out my grandparents who helped raise me and unfortunately won't be attending the wedding their anniversary was May 11 which lands on a Saturday next year :)

  • We originally wanted September or October but decided against it because we would be getting married on a Sunday and a Sunday or saturday in the fall wouldn't work for our families. Most of my family and our friends are huge football fans, so that was out. Then we thought about May. There's not a lot going on for us so it made sense. We then wanted May 26th because DF's bday is on the 6th and mine is the 16th. We thought it would be cute to have the 26th for our anniversary, but our venue was already booked up 14 months!. So we chose the Sunday before, which happens to be May 19th. We like it because our dating anniversary is the 9th and I've always loved the number 19, so it's good! Lol.

  • Haha I wanted peonies in my bouquet which is why I chose May.  I didn't want Mother's Day weekend or Memorial Day weekend.  This left the first weekend and the weekend of the 18th.  Around here, the first weekend of May can potentially be chilly, so the 18th it was!

We wanted a Sunday wedding so it can have a Jewish Ceremony so we were only looking at 3 day weekends since both our families will have to travel (1/2 of mine is in Michigan, so distance!) I wanted this coming Labor day, but the cousin i'm closest to was in a wedding then.  It wasn't worth pissing off her famly and my grandma, so we just went for May :) Cause its CT, I was worried about having it Columbus day (October) to Mach pretty much...its hard to tell how cold it will be/when the snow will fall.

  • We orginally wanted this september during labor day weekend. However it was way to soon to plan a wedding this year. So we choose sunday memorial day weekend to allow more time for family, they are off on monday and we got a big discount having it on a sunday vs. a saturday. =)

Orginally we wanted to get married in September (we started planning in October last year) but my parents suggested we wait another 6 months, and since they are helping us pay for th wedding, we agreed. Orginally we wanted May 18 because it would be our 12.5 yr dating anniversary but couldn't because it's communion season at our church, so we picked the 25th because we didn't want to get married the weekend of Mother's Day.

    Love this^^

We chose May 11th because of these thoughts-
Originally we wanted September, but due to the influx of birthdays and anniversaries, Spring was the quietest time.
His Mothers Birthday is the 22nd (yesterday) so we knew we wanted early May because April was too unpredictable and June was too late
The venue we picked is booked the 4th so the 11th is was

Lame, but there you have it :)

  • The biggest factor in our date was my Brother In Law. He is deployed over seas and I wanted to wait till he was home safe and sound. So my sister can enjoy things and not be worrying and because he is the closest I have to a brother. His return is sometime in the winter. We dont like the winter so we figured May. Great weather.Originally I was going with 5/4 because I have thing with numbers and 5/4/2013 has 012345 in it. But my BF who is my MOH is in another wedding that day so we bumped it to 5/11 which worked for my numbers thing because it has a double (dont ask I know I am weird). Course now its all up in the air but that was my original reasons for May 11th

  • I originally wanted September 2012 but FI wanted a longer engagement so we ended up just opening the calendar and decided on May because it wasn't too hot or too cold and then he closed his eyes and landed on a date.

Sounds ridiculous IK but we didnt really care about the date as long as we were going to get to marry each other :)

  • We originally planned for June 30th 2012, but had to postpone for financial reasons. Picked May 25th as our new date because we figured people could for sure come that weekend, also that holiday doesn't have much significance for either of our families.

  • After Fi proposed he said he wanted to get married May 1st the farmers almanac said it never rained May 1st lol we looked it up for 2013 and that's a Wednesday we new we'd want a Saturday wedding. I wanted to avoid Mothers day weekend and memorial day weekend so we had two options 4th 18th one of his groomsmen graduates from military officer school the 11th so at that point new May 18th was best, it also happened to make 2 yrs from the date he proposed!
  • My venue offered a major off-season discount for marrying between November and May 31st. So we started with the last weekend in May and worked our way backwards and as it turned out the 24th was the only slot they had left! :)

That's cool that you got an off season discount, we got a Friday discount but were told that May is prime wedding month which surprised me.

Oh interesting. I think what is and is not "off-season" differs between area of the country as well as individual locations. I'm in Massachusetts, so Cape Cod venues have their high season between Memorial Day and Labor Day, but if you go out west to the Berkshires September and October become high-season due to people travelling there for the fall foliage.

May for high-season does seem different though - is your venue a big one that hosts lots of graduations and proms during May as well as weddings?

  • I have a sentimental reason as to why I picked my date, My Grandfather passed away this January and its honestly one of the hardest things to deal with because he was more like a Dad to me then a Grandpa. Well in February I got engaged and was still coping with my Gradndfathers death....So my FI and I were talking about when to have the wedding and I thought that having it May 25th,2013 would be ideal because it would be close to my Grandfathers birthday which is May 29th Smile
