October 2012 Weddings

So tired... but excited!

Home reno has begun!  I'm super exited but I am already so tired and it's not even the hard part yet.  FI is out of town until Saturday morning, so I've been tackling everything on my own so far.  My schedule so far:

Saturday - I purchased all the cabinets for our kitchen, the backsplash, tile for the bathrooms, and all the supplies needed.  Everything is being delivered on Saturday morning.  I also picked up several paint samples and put those up on the wall.  Hated all of them!

Sunday - I decided it would be nice to surprise FI with refinished bathroom cabinets, so went back to Home Depot for more paint samples and the paint and supplies needed for the cabinets.  I knocked out the guest bathroom cabinets (it took pretty much all day!) and started on our master bathroom cabinets.  Also, I narrowed down the paint color :)

Monday - Got off work and hit up Home Depot for new bathroom faucets.  Came home and worked on the master bath some more.  I also removed and packed up everything from our kitchen cabinets to prep for the removal.

Tonight - starting removal of the kitchen cabinets with the help of FI's friend.  I'm super nervous about this but I'm staying positive.  I'm confident that we will be able to get at least the uppers removed.  I also need to stop at Home Depot again for paint and supplies for the kitchen.

Tomorrow - Remove any remaining cabinets and figure out a temp solution for the kitchen sink to remain operable.  Start on painting the kitchen.  I really don't want to worry about taping off around our new cabinets, so I am just going to paint before we install them.  FI's friend is helping me again, thank God!

Thursday - RELAXING!! and getting my hair done :)

Friday - Finish painting the kitchen.

Saturday - Installing all the new cabinets!!  This is going to be the hardest part of it all.

Wish us luck!  Can't wait to show y'all before and after pictures!!

  • Wow that is a lot of work! We need to redo our kitchen in the next couple years and I am dreading all of that work, but it will be worth it in the end!

  • I'm super impressed you can do all that yourself!!  I know how to paint and knock stuff out but that's where it ends.  I'm happy with myself when I can surprise FI with a clean apartment to come home too, lol!
  • Good luck! Having just lived through a full bathroom/kitchen gut job in our condo this past fall I will offer some friendly suggestions/advice.

    1) Don't expect everything to go according to plan. We found mold behind our cabinets and had to get someone to come look at it and figure out if it was surface mold that could be scraped and bleached or if it was in the walls (it was just surface thank god).

    2) Trim your nails down. I ended up with a lot of broken nails and scrapes. I still have a scar on my knuckle from removing tile.

    3) Wear solid footwear.

    4) An edging tool will save you SO much time when painting. Buy one if you haven't already.

    5) While you are without a kitchen, plan on a lot of microwave cooking and go buy some paper plates, plastic glasses and cutlery. I was SO happy we did this.

    6) Be prepared to have to wash any dishes you do absolutely need to cook with in the bathroom sink/bathtub.

    7) Everything will (probably) take longer than you expect.

    8) Don't try to do it all by yourself.

    9) Don't stress. It will end.

Good luck! Show us pictures when you're done.
