Checks to Mr. and Mrs. New Last Name

Hi Knotties,

I know this has been covered in threads about gift-giving, but I still get confused, and thought I'd ask for a bit of clarification.

FI and I got a check to Mr. & Mrs. New Last Name (his current last name, obviously). I know I can't deposit this check, but if we share a checking account under both of our current names (so my full name and his full name, which the check is made out to partially), can he deposit it? Or no?

So confusing!

Re: Checks to Mr. and Mrs. New Last Name

  • I would think so.  As long as he signs the back and his name is on the account.  FI had deposited checks written out to me before, I signed the back, and we have a joint account.

The only time I think it'll be tricky is if it's only made out to you, new last name only.

  • Yes, he can. We've had a few checks to "Me Current Name and Him Current Name,"  and I've had no problem putting them in our joint account. Yay checks!
  • By law yes. You can deposit it as well you need to sign your maiden and married name tho. Some states are different though so you may need to just have him deposit it to be safe
  • I was told by our bank to have us both endorse the check prior to deposit. Not sure if it really makes a difference.

  • We had talked to our banker about this because we knew it was coming up.  He said that I would sign with my current name and they would document everything related to those checks and once we get our certified marriage license the file would be complete.  I would go into your bank and talk to them about it.  I'm sure they've handled this before.

We got our first check made out to the both of us in the mail yesterday.  I definitely had a little *squee* moment.
  • Thanks, ladies!

  • I believe it should be ok as long as you have a joint account.
  • I've deposited cheques with my fiance name into our joint chequing adn had no problems.
  • My bank is really lenient. We had a check written out to "The Future Mr. & Mrs. LastName" we deposited it at the ATM and there were no problems at all. FI and I plan on depositing all of our wedding gifts at the ATM to reduce the hassle.

  • FI and I don't have a joint account, so I guess we'll jump this hurdle when we get to it. We just moved to another state in July, and I don't even have a local account yet. So far the only check we've gotten has been made out to just me, maiden name. I'm hyphenating, so it'll definitely be interesting to see what happens.
