Dress Alterations Gone Wrong

Today I went to pick up my wedding dress, what my seamstress and I had discussed and what she had done were two totally different things. I have an A-line all lace and beaded gown that has a deep "V" in the back, I was wanting the dress to be very form fitting. As well as needing some lace to cover up the inch of my corset-bra that shows in the back.
Needless to say, it looks like I have no hips, the dress just lays straight down and there was no lace to cover of the corset-bra. I am a petite girl, so it's very difficult to find clothing that fits, which is why I was wanting the dress to be really form figuring.
I'm supposed to pick the dress up on Wednesday, but aren't sure what to do. Do I have the seamstress take in more around the hips to help give me more of a figure?

Re: Dress Alterations Gone Wrong

  • So it sounds like you wanted it to be made more into a trumpet style??  Form fitting through the hips and slightly on the thighs?  If so, maybe use that term with the seamstress.  You definitely need to let her know that you aren't happy with the work thus far and give direction for what you want.  Have her pin the dress the way you want it so you can both see it the way you want it to be.  Good luck!

  • I would! Most seamstresses will fix a mistake for free, so maybe she will. If she has clips, use them to show her what you want as far as form fitting goes. I had to do that with mine. And really stress the bra thing, you definitely should be able to get that fixed. Also, you should have plenty of time if you go back soon.

  • Before you accept the dress the way it is I would make her fix it if you aren't happy with the alterations tell her exactly what you aren't happy with and have her write it down so that she fixes everything that want so that it is perfect for your day. That is why you shold always allow time for more than one fitting.  I had 3 fittings in all because it wasn't exactly right the second time I went in so the seamstress wrote down the things that still needed tweeking and fixing and by the thrid fitting is was perfect.  I think if you have her fix the things that you don't like about it now you should have plenty of time.

  • Definitely fix the dress if you aren't happy with it!  Did you voice your concerns when you tried it on?  I agree with the others, generally, they will fix "mistakes" for free.  Also, I'm in the mindset that I wouldn't mind paying a little extra to make sure I feel comfortable in confident in my dress.  Don't be shy, and speak your mind!
  • Thank you ladies!! I had a mild meltdown in the dressing room! I will go in tomorrow and have her take it in in the sides more. I mean, I am only wearing this dress once, I want to look beautiful, not frumpy.

  • If you're not happy, get it fixed! This dress is supposed to be the one that makes you feel your best on your big day, so there's no need to settle due to a seamstress error :) As PP said most will fix it for free, so just explain what you're not happy with!
  • Definitely do not take your dress home until you are happy.  If you do and come back, she may charge you separately and it may be hard to get an appointment in.  A follow-up s normally included in the same price quote and follow-up appointments made before you leave her store.
