Different colored bridesmaid dresses? Bad idea?!

So I've never been able to get behind the idea of 9 of the same dress in the same color so I'm thinking abour choosing 3 different colors and 3 different dresses and mix and match 'em.  The colors will relate but they won't be tonal..
I can't find any photos of something like this..Has anyone seen anybody try something similar?  Thanks!

  • If you're going to go for different colors, I think they should be able to pick the ones they want.

  • I agree with letting them choose which color to wear from the options.  Buttaflai's bio is a great example of this.

  • You should definitely let them pick.

I've seen it done many times where the brides just specifies the colour and the BMs all go and get the dress of their choice in some version of the colour.  That will get rid of the matchy-matchy look and make for happy BMs who can pick figure-flattering dresses they love.

    Examples:

  • I love those examples of the girls choosing their own dress in a shade of the color specified by the bride. For example, if you told them "Please find a dress in any shade of blue" I think you'd end up with a gorgeous array of tonal shades - and the best part is that each girl will be wearing something she picked out for herself that she feels comfortable in. That makes a huge difference in comfort level for the day.

What 3 colors were you considering, though? Just curious. :-)

  • Yea, a few other people have also mentioned the pink might stand out..just wish the company offered a 3rd shade that worked with the grey and blue..We don't have our flowers nailed down yet but I would make sure they tied in all the colors of the dresses.
  • I know what you mean! I'm doing a couple different shades of the same color and letting the bridesmaids pick their own dresses!

[QUOTE]I agree.  I would just do the grey and blue, and then use the pink for flowers. And I am so in love with the second picture above.

And between that picture and buttaflai's WP pics, I have seriously considered changing my wedding colours and plans and just doing that instead because it's GORGEOUS.

  • MNIN:  I agree.  That second picture is just stunning.

  • I love the spectrum of color look.  Had we not gone with black and white, I probably would have had my girls in shades of blue.  I'm decorating the AHR in shades of blue instead.

With your colors, I would let them pick a shade of blue, then give them a grey accessory (like a wrap or sash) and pink flowers.  I think that would look so beautiful and still really put together.
This is a neglected planning bio.
This is a belated married bio, with no reviews yet because I'm lazy.

Sometimes I feel like people think that brides are delicate little flower princesses who get all dressed up and pretty for one special moment of their dreams, when really they're just normal people who just happen to be getting married. Things shouldn't have to be sugar-coated for grown-ass women. -mstar284
  • Oooh, I really like aerin's idea!!  That sounds absolutely gorgeous and it's a fantastic way of incorporating the colours you like.

  • Yes it does!! Thanks so much!
    Have a great weekend everyone!
  • If you use aerin's idea, I think posting pictures here after the wedding is a must because it sounds really pretty.

  • this is one of the first pictures i fell in love with when i was starting to plan my wedding in my head. i dont like the guys look, but i love that all the dresses are different but in the same material. each style fits different people better and given the color choices each could pick their own.
