Suggestions for recognizing an absent family member?

I just read a thread on remembering deceased loved ones. I need an appropriate way to recognize my FI's son. He is not deceased, and will be at boot camp. He won't be able to join us for the ceremony. Our original plan was to travel to see him graduate utilizing the time away from work to celebrate his event as well as ours. I'd like to do something to recognize him, and am at a bit of a loss.

If you're having programs, you can include his name under "family members", and list his name with a note that says "Currently away at boot camp", or a more formal way of wording that.

Our ceremony will be so simple, I had not considered programs. However, this seems an ideal compromise. I need to read up and research programs. Thank you for the advice!

<div>We did something similar for my cousin, who would have been one of my BM's. I listed her under the BM section at the bottom, and put "in spirit from Italy" in parenthesis.</div>

Are you wanting to say something DURING the ceremony? We are doing something, not just for deceased family members, its just changing the words a little...to say something like..."say a prayer for friends and family who cant join us here today" idk just an idea. Good luck :
