Inner Envelope Names

We are planning to use first names (for married couples) and first and last names (for single guests) for the inner envelopes.  For the married couples, whose name should go first, man or woman?  I can't find this in any of the etiquitte books b/c they all state to have the inner envelope more formal.

Re: Inner Envelope Names

  • This is merely a guess, but I would assume that you put the mans name first. That's how it usually is with things (i.e. Mr and Mrs instead of Mrs and Mr).

  • PP is incorrect.  If you're going to go informal (I hope your wedding is) then the woman's first name goes first.
  • what banana said.

  • The wedding is not informal, but we are.  In fact, we chose a fairly formal place to help dress up the wedding.  We are keeping it quite small though, and so we want our guests to feel close to us, thus the slight informality of the invitations.  Thanks for all the suggestions.  I would agree that the lady goes first.  Just wanted to make sure majority rules.

    Thanks ladies!
  • If the wedding is fairly formal and you're addressing your envelopes in an informal way, that can be quite confusing to your guests.

Techically the way you address the envelope has to do with the formality of the event - not with the formality of your relationship.
