Olowalu Questions

Hi ladies!

So I just visited Olowalu last week and I loved it, of course! I just had a couple questions for anyone on this board who has had their wedding at Olowalu already or knows more info:

1. Did you get married in December at Olowalu? And if so, did you get a tent? My concern is rain. I'm leaning towards a tent just because we'll most likely have 100+ guests, but I wanted to know if I could do without one since a staked tent has to be put up on the side of the house rather than in front next to the ocean (unless we go with water barrel tents, which cost much more).

2. Does anyone know the name of the mature trees that are on the property? I love them!

Thank you as always! HAPPY MONDAY!

Are you referring to the big tree out front by the ocean? If so, that is a Banyan Tree.

I am not getting married in December but was in Maui last December around the date of your wedding and the weather was beautiful and there wasn't any rain. Donna, Olowalu's property mgr, mentioned to us that there are very few days where it is rainy at Olowalu. Sometimes there is a brief rain shower but it typically clears up quickly she said.

    Hope this helps! Happy Monday!!

Jackcody got married in South Maui (not Olowalu) in December 2010 and had some rain.  I would definitely recommend having a tent prepared for that time of year.  Ours was a staked tent in the middle of the venue, but I guess Olowalu's rules are different.  We almost lost the tent a few times due to wind, though :P

Wow! Thanks for the quick responses! Thanks, jessj336, that's what I assumed it was but wanted a second opinion!

Tanq, ack! I was hoping we could get away with not having a tent, but I think it's inevitable--especially for as many guests as we're having. We can go with stakes or water barrels, but they have a location on the property for each type of tent...

    Ok, thanks! :)

What our coordinator allowed was for us to put down a deposit to hold a tent.  Her rental company allowed us to change our minds up to 7 days before the event.  7 days out, we had thunderstorms forecasted, so we kept it.

I just think, with 100 guests, during rainy season, you just want to be safe.  The porch of Olowalu only holds about 35 in case of rain, right?  You just don't want to be out of an option, JUST in case there is rain.  I mean, even if it's a short burst, where would everyone gather?  I don't think you want everyone just standing in the house waiting, right?

True true. I thought about all of those scenarios before, but was just hoping for a way out of it. lol. But I know it's inevitable, it's just one of those things that I wish I didn't get to get, you know?

I guess this discussion is closed. lol. But good idea about putting a deposit down to hold it and being able to decide yes or no closer to the date! But, I am definitely going with yes for the tent...

I'm not sure which tree you're talking about, but the ones 'round back by the dance floor and the Adirondack chairs are Monkey Pod trees.

As for the tent - I think having a back-up is a great idea for the rainy season, even if it does mean going around the side.

We did a tent in July after I had been adamant that I did not want one - and I am soooo glad we had one!  It really finished the whole look and made it seem more formal.  I would absolutely get a tent again, and definitely spring for the water barrels.  I was not impressed with the location for the staked tent, especially in relation to the dance area.  My thoughts were if I had had to have a staked tent I would have had to bring in an external dance floor which was pretty expensive in itself.
    Go tent!!  :)

Another option...which we are doing is using the pergolas from Pacific Event Group...no water barrels required...however i am not sure how they are set-up. Not quite sure if they would have enough to accommodate your number of guests as you would require between 8 to 10. I like them as they are less common than tents. HTH! J. :-)

Yea, I emailed Donna at Olowalu and she did say that tree next to the house is a monkey pod tree (than's kaesha!) and the tree nearer to the water is Moreton Bay Fig tree (banyan).

I emailed my WC about having the staked tent next to the house and she said for the size of my wedding, it may be too long from that space, so I may just have to get a water barrel tent for the front of the house. We have lots of time, so there's no rush, but there sure is a significant amount of $ between a staked tent and a water barrel tent!

maui2011, I'll look into pergolas. They look beautiful in photos, but I think they're super expensive, right?! I'll inquire with my WC about them! They do look beautiful...!

FYI - the pergolas are very expensive.  I believe I was quoted $500 each, and when you can only fit 8-10 people in one it is a very expensive, but beautiful, option.

Debbie is very easy to work with and gave me a great deal...i attribute this to her relationship with my WC. They do hold 10, however if you line them up in a row...for your size you would probably need two rows...you can fit more people due to the extenders. HTH! J. :-)
