Any tips on colors?

My reception venue has lots of red/burgandy/gold. I dont want to competely match the room but can't seem to settle on a combo i like. Any suggestions?
Wedding is in November. Also any opinions on going for more than 2 colors.

My color inspiration was a thank you card someone had given me a while before getting engaged...so we had 5 colors. We ended up dropping one but I regretted my decision to use so many on several occasions. You would think it makes things easier but it really doesn't (because you have to find ways to incorporate them ALL..without ending up looking like a big bowl of rainbow sherbet..unless that's what you're going for). Stick with 2...3 max.
As far as colors....what colors do you like? Do they not work at all? What about jewel tones...a deep blue maybe with gold (or silver)? Or a royal purple with a green (and maybe cream)?
    Good luck!

I wouldn't worry too much about the venue. People won't notice, say, the carpet. I might avoid bright pink, but if you use, say, navy and silver, you'll be fine.

We did a rustic fall "theme" and had red, brown and orange mostly. It worked fine.

I had a friend who did a rainbow wedding - all her BMs wore black dresses, with different colored shoes and accessories - so purple, pink, yellow, blue, green, red. Her dress was white with black accents and her bouquet was rainbow colored. It worked pretty well.

My venue was red/burgundy and gold as well. We ignored the red and did touches of gold, but that was a secondary color for sure. We did pay for chair rentals, which took out a lot of the red (so it was only in the carpet) and my main color was purple. I think it looked pretty good (of course, it's my wedding, so it was awesome!).

ditto pp about choosing the colors you want.

I used pink, fuschia and greens for my summer wedding, but I would have also loved to do black, white, and yellow!
