Include Irish Background in Ceremony- Handfasting? Yea or Nay?

My side of the family is of Irish descent, and I was trying to find something to incorporate into our ceremony that was unique to the Irish culture. I don't know if my google sources are true or not, but I saw that handfasting might be a possible option. Then I saw on another post here that it is closely related to the Pagan/Wicca religion, which we are not at all. I don't want to give the wrong impression during the ceremony- (my mother is Christian and my FI's mother's side is UU, his father's side is partially Catholic). Fi and myself are not of any one religion. So I guess my question is, is there any Irish ceremony ideas that would be better than handfasting, or would there be a way to incorporate handfasting without making it seem like we are now Wicca/Pagan? I was thinking more about representing the Irish culture in my family, not the religion part.

You could do Irish Tiding Stones. StageManager, one of the Knottie regs, did that at her wedding. You could Google it for now, and I'm sure she'll be along eventually to explain it better. I'm not Irish, but I thought it was so cool when she explained it once that I used a twist on the idea and did a river rock "guestbook."

ETA: She mentioned it recently in this thread as well:

What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14

  • My husband and I are both of Irish descent, and we're planning a slightly belated honeymoon to Ireland.
  • Most religions have ceremony based on wicca
  • My family is very Irish (my mom has dual citizenship in the US and Ireland) but that does not mean that I am doing things in my ceremony/wedding just because they are Irish. I will be using some traditions but I am selecting those that make the most sense to my current life and relationship with my FH. PLEASE do not use a "tradition" just because it is listed as tradition by google. Make sure they are things that you care about and are interested in! Good luck!
